Uma Chetry’s cricketing path traces back to Kandulimari village in Bokakhat, Assam, where she grew up in a farming household. With no formal facilities nearby, she often walked long distances to attend practice, her determination shaped by the support of her family specially her mother and her early love for the game. From those modest beginnings she forged a reputation as Northeast India’s first woman to break into the national side, carrying the aspirations of an entire region with her glove work and gritty batting.

Her rise gathered pace in the Assam domestic circuit, where her consistency behind the stumps and useful lower order runs marked her out. In the Women’s Premier League (WPL) she earned a contract with UP Warriorz in 2024, a move that exposed her to world-class competition and accelerated her development as a keeper-batter. That same season she was drafted into India’s squad as a replacement for the injured Yastika Bhatia during the tour of Australia, signaling the selectors’ growing trust in her as a reliable back-up option.

Uma Chetry’s International Career

Chetry’s international career opened in July 2024 with a T20I debut against South Africa. Though chances were initially limited, her composure and sharp glove work won praise. A year later, even without debuting in the One Day format, she received a late call into India’s squad for the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup—again stepping in for Yastika Bhatia. It was the culmination of a journey that had begun on dusty village grounds in Assam and now placed her on cricket’s grandest stage.
