New Zealand bowling all-rounder Thamsyn Newton, 30, has announced her retirement from all forms of cricket, concluding a 14-year career that included 10 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 15 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

Newton was part of the New Zealand squad at the 2016 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup held in India, where the team narrowly missed out on a spot in the final after a six-run semi-final defeat to the eventual champions, the West Indies. She was also a member of the White Ferns squad for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2017.
The medium-pacer all-rounder has taken 11 wickets in 10 One Day Internationals, including a standout five-wicket haul against Pakistan in 2016. In Twenty20 Internationals, she claimed nine wickets across 15 matches, with best figures of three wickets for just nine runs in only her third T20I appearance.
Internationally, she last played an ODI in 2017 but regained a New Zealand central contract in 2021, adding three more T20Is to her record.
Newton also featured for the Perth Scorchers in the second edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). In 14 matches, the medium-fast bowler took six wickets as the Scorchers finished runners-up, falling to the Sydney Sixers in the final.
On the New Zealand domestic circuit, Newton started her domestic cricket career with Wellington in 2011–12, moved to Canterbury from 2014 to 2018, then returned to Wellington for five years before joining Central Districts in 2023–24.
She’s played in four Hallyburton Johnstone Shield finals—winning once each with Canterbury and Wellington—and claimed four Super Smash titles with Wellington, also finishing runners-up with Central Districts last season.
A dual-sport athlete, she’s also competed in the Farah Palmer Cup rugby competition for Wellington Pride and Hawke’s Bay Tui.
