The 2024 Women’s Big Bash League is in its business end, and the last league-stage match was crucial for the Brisbane Heat. A win not only brought them a step closer to the final but also secured their place in the Challenger with a victory over the Sydney Sixers. The Heat’s victory was fueled by a stellar performance, highlighted by Indian star Jemimah Rodrigues, whose crucial knock, supported by skipper Jess Jonassen, helped the team advance to the knockouts. Scroll further to watch Jemimah in action.
Jemimah Rodrigues played a pivotal role in Brisbane Heat’s successful chase with a scintillating 39 off just 22 balls, showcasing her aggressive intent and ability to dominate the bowlers right from ball one. Coming in at a critical position after Grace Harris’s early dismissal for 6 runs, Jemimah steadied the innings and shifted momentum with her confident stroke play, which included five boundaries and a six. The knock not only laid a solid foundation for the middle order but also eased out all the pressure on skipper Jess Jonassen, making it easier for her to hold the chase together.
Brisbane Heat won comfortably by 5 wickets in the 40th match of Women’s Big Bash League 2024 in Brisbane, chasing down a 141-run target with 18 balls to spare. Batting first, the Sixers managed to score 140 in their 20 overs. Melie Kerr scored 41 from 37 deliveries, and Ellyse Perry 33 off 34 were the two top scorers; however, middle-order failure restricted the total. Jess Jonassen bowled well to bag 3/26 while Lucy Hamilton proved herself with 3/21.
In the chase, Brisbane Heat came out of an early setback with Jemimah’s brilliance, followed by a composed 39* off 29 from skipper Jonassen and Laura Harris’ cameo of 12* off just 5 balls.
Jonassen’s all-round excellence earned her the Player of the Match award and propelled Brisbane Heat to the second spot in the standings. This puts them through to the Challenger match on 29 November, where they will face either the Sydney Thunder or the Hobart Hurricanes for a chance to reach their second consecutive final, this time against the Melbourne Renegades.
