Heather Knight’s fifty and Samantha Bates four-fer guided Sydney Thunder to a convincing table-topping victory

Sydney Sixers led by skipper Ellyse Perry defeated Hobart Hurricanes led by skipper Elyse Villani by 6 runs in the 15th match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 10 at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart. Skipper Ellyse Perry was awarded the Player of the Match for her brilliant half-century (86 off 62 balls) for her side.

Sydney Thunder led by skipper Phoebe Litchfield were all set to face Brisbane Heat led by skipper Jess Jonassen in the 16th match of the tournament at the W.A.C.A, Perth.

Brisbane Heat skipper Jess Jonassen won the toss and opted to field first. After being inserted to bat first, the Sydney Thunder openers Georgia Voll and Chamari Athapaththu got their side off to a solid start with a 52-run opening partnership. Skipper Jess Jonassen picked up the wicket of Chamari Athapaththu to provide the first breakthrough for Brisbane Heat. Georgia Voll soon followed her back to the pavilion to provide the 2nd breakthrough for Brisbane Heat.

Heather Knight joined skipper Phoebe Litchfield at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 57-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to take their side closer to the 130-run mark. Shikha Pandey picked up the big wicket of the opposition skipper Phoebe Litchfield to provide the 3rd breakthrough for her side. Sydney Thunder eventually ended up with a competitive total of 170/5 in their quota of 20 overs.

Heather Knight (59* off 34 balls), skipper Phoebe Litchfield (40 off 25 balls), Chamari Athapaththu (33 off 25 balls), and Georgia Voll (22 off 22 balls) were the top performers with the bat for Sydney Thunder. Skipper Jess Jonassen (4-0-22-3), Shikha Pandey (4-0-21-1), and Nicola Hancock (4-0-34-1) were the top performers with the ball for Brisbane Heat.

Chasing a target of 171, the Brisbane Heat openers wicket-keeper batter Georgia Redmayne and Grace Harris got their side off to a decent start with a 26-run opening partnership. Hannah Darlington picked up the wicket of the wicket-keeper batter Georgia Redmayne to provide the 1st breakthrough for Sydney Thunder. Jemimah Rodrigues soon followed her back to the pavilion to provide the 2nd breakthrough for Sydney Thunder.

Charli Knott joined Grace Harris at the crease and the duo stitched a much-needed 37-run partnership for the 3rd wicket to take their side closer to the 100-run mark. Taneale Peschel picked up the wicket of Grace Harris to provide the much-needed 3rd breakthrough for her side. Thunder kept losing wickets at regular intervals and as a result, failed to find any sort of momentum in the run chase.

Charli Knott kept the hopes alive for the Brisbane Heat with a brilliant half-century but was unable to take her side over the line as she departed in the 17th over of the run chase. Brisbane Heat was eventually bundled out for 151, with five balls to spare, as a result, falling 19 runs short of the target. Charli Knott (55 off 37 balls), and Grace Harris (41 off 31 balls) were the top performers with the bat for Brisbane Heat.

Samantha Bates (4-0-25-4), Taneale Peschel (3-0-23-2), Chamari Athapaththu (4-0-33-2), Shabnim Ismail (3.1-0-22-1), and Hannah Darlington (4-0-34-1) were the top performers with the ball for Sydney Thunder. Samantha Bates was awarded the Player of the Match for her brilliant spell of 4-0-25-4.
