The national women’s teams of the West Indies and Australia will go head-to-head in the 8th match of the ongoing warm-up series ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The game will take place at The Sevens Stadium, Dubai, on the 1st of October 2024, at 7:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST). Defending champions Australia, coming off a win in their first warm-up match, will look to continue their form, while the West Indies will aim to recover from their opening loss.
In their first warm-up game, the West Indies showed promise with the ball, restricting India to 141, with skipper Hayley Matthews leading from the front with impressive figures of 4/17 (4). However, their batting faltered early, leaving them to rely on a 57-run partnership between Shemaine Campbelle and Chinelle Henry. Despite Henry’s unbeaten 59 and contributions from Afy Fletcher (21) and Campbelle (20), a lower-order collapse saw them fall short by 20 runs, finishing at 121/8.
The 2016 World Cup champions, the West Indies, aim to replicate their title-winning form and although they lost their first warm-up match, there were several positives. They team looks to build on them and secure a win in their next match to gather momentum ahead of the World Cup, where they’ll face England, South Africa, Scotland, and Bangladesh in Group B.
Defending champions Australia began their warm-up campaign on a strong note, securing a commanding victory over arch-rivals England. Beth Mooney anchored the innings with a composed 30-ball 50, while middle-order contributions from Ash Gardner (21), Tahlia McGrath (31), and Georgia Wareham (18*) propelled Australia to a competitive 162/6. On the bowling front, Darcie Brown made the early breakthrough, Sophie Molineux followed picking up two key wickets, and McGrath’s 3-wicket haul wrapped up a clinical performance, leading Australia to a comfortable 33-run win.
Having swept Bangladesh earlier this year, followed by a series win against New Zealand only recently, and now a dominant win over in-form England, six-time champions Australia are on track in their title defence campaign. They will aim to carry this momentum into their second warm-up game and into the World Cup, where they face tough competition from India, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan in Group A.
Australia, with an impressive 13 wins from 16 T20Is against the West Indies, holds the upper hand. However, the West Indies, not too long ago, stunned Australia with a memorable victory on their home soil. They’ll be eager to recreate that upset, making this upcoming clash a highly anticipated and potentially thrilling encounter.
