Taniya Bhatia: Punjab’s Stumping Star

Punjab has produced some fine athletes over the years, it was just a matter of time when one such fine talent represented the Indian Women’s team. Taniya became the first player to do so and rightly so because she has made an impact right away.

Here’s the journey of Indian Women’s team Wicket-Keeper batter Taniya Bhatia.

  1. Taniya Bhatia was born on 28 November 1997 in Chandigarh.
  2. Bhatia’s father Sanjay Bhatia was himself a cricket player, just like her father, she took up wicket keeping.
  3. She has two siblings, elder sister Sanjana and a younger brother Sehaj.
  4. At the young age of 11, Taniya became the youngest girl to represent Punjab in U19
  5. Taniya represented Punjab at the senior level at age of 16.
  6. Bhatia trained under former Indian cricketer and Yuvraj Singh’s father Yograj Singh while she was studying at DAV Senior Secondary School.
  7. At the age of 16, she also made it to India A squad.
  8. She went on a professional slump for two years which almost made her lose her interest in cricket altogether.
  9. Taniya’s mother Sapna played an important role in motivating her and made sure that Taniya did pursue her dreams.
  10. Taniya becomes the first Women player from Chandigarh to represent the Indian National Team.
  11. She made her Women’s Twenty20 International cricket  debut for India Women against South Africa Women on 13 February 2018
  12. She made her  One Day International debut on 11 September 2018 against the Sri Lankan Women’s team.
  13. Taniya was named in India’s squad for the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 tournament in the West Indies
  14. ICC named Taniya as one of the five breakout stars in women’s cricket in 2018
  15. Taniya is currently being coached by RP Singh and also trained with former India wicketkeeper, Kiran More at the National Cricket Academy.
