In the ongoing fourth edition of the Women’s Hundred, which got underway on 23rd July, the third match was played between hosts Manchester Originals and Welsh Fire. Welsh Fire got off the mark in their first match of the Women’s Hundred by beating the Originals by 7 wickets. The Fire chased down the target of 114 with four balls to spare. Sophie Ecclestone 27* (15) & 1/28 (Manchester Originals)

The Manchester Originals’ skipper contributed to both departments, though in a losing cause. Ecclestone’s innings with the bat provided the finishing touch as she smashed 27* off 15 balls to guide the Originals post a fighting total of 113. She hit one boundary and two sixes in her unbeaten 27. Later with the ball, the left-arm spinner grabbed the wicket of Hayley Matthews, trapping her in front of the stumps.

Jess Jonassen 3/17 (Welsh Fire)

It was Jonassen’s three-fer earlier in Manchester’s innings that put the hosts on the back foot. The left-arm spinner grabbed three wickets in the opening game for Welsh Fire. Her first wicket was Laura Wolvaardt for 37(27), which also broke the opening stand of 58 between Wolvaardt and Beth Mooney. Later on, she dismissed middle-order batter Kathryn Bryce for 6, with her third victim being Eleanor Threlkeld. She finished with figures of 3 for 17 off her 20 balls, making her the top bowler for Welsh. Later on, with the bat, she scored an unbeaten 9 off 7 balls finishing the game alongside Sophia Dunkley.

Sophia Dunkley 69* (Welsh Fire)

Sophia Dunkley guided the Welsh Fire to victory with her unbeaten 69. The right-handed opener navigated her side while chasing down 114 with four balls to spare. Sophia initially took her time before some late acceleration. She smashed nine boundaries and two six throughout her innings of 69* off 47 balls. For her crucial knock, she was awarded the Player of the Match.
