Historical Highlights – Oman Women’s National Cricket Team

Since their senior international debut at the 2002 ACC Trophy, the Oman women’s team has garnered notable achievements. Noteworthy among these include clinching the joint title in the ACC Twenty20 Cup in 2007 and securing runners-up positions in both the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 and the ACC U-17 Challenge Cup in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

The team made its international debut at the 2009 ACC Women’s Twenty20 Championship in Malaysia. They secured victory against Kuwait during the group stage, but they finished tenth after a defeat to Bhutan in the ninth-place play-off. The subsequent edition in 2011, hosted by Kuwait, saw Oman unable to secure a win. However, their status in the cricketing fraternity was elevated in 2014 when Oman ascended from affiliate to associate member of the ICC, broadening their scope for international cricket engagements.

In a landmark moment for Omani cricket, the nation hosted the inaugural Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Women’s Twenty20 Championship in December 2014, where the Oman women’s team’s performance earned them qualification for the 2016 World Twenty20 tournament, marking their global debut. Placing third in the competition ahead of Kuwait, Oman replicated their achievement in the subsequent year’s tournament hosted in Qatar.

The ICC’s decision to grant full Women’s Twenty20 International (WT20I) status to all its members in April 2018 further cemented Oman’s position on the international stage. Subsequently, Oman embarked on their WT20I journey in January 2020 during a triangular series against Qatar and Kuwait in Doha.

Their participation in the ACC Women’s Premier Cup 2024 saw them placed in Group B, although they couldn’t secure victories to advance to the quarterfinals. Similarly, in the ACC Women’s T20 Championship 2024, they finished in the 9th position.
