Lanning has led Australia to three T20 World Cup victories and won the ODI World Cup in New Zealand in 2022. The Mumbai Indians had appointed Harmanpreet Kaur as their captain the day before. In addition, Harman led India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2023 semifinals, where they were defeated by Australia. The international cricket match between Harman and Lanning has been significant. Because of this, the opening matchup of the WPL in 2023 between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians is deemed to be a marquee matchup.
Lanning said after being named the Delhi Capitals captain during an event in Mumbai, “It is a very proud moment for me. First, to be involved in a franchise like Delhi Capitals, and to be named the captain is a huge honor and it is something that l am very much looking forward to.”
Lanning has represented Australia in six Tests, 103 One-Day Internationals, and 132 Twenty20 Internationals, scoring 345, 4602, and 3405 runs in each of these formats. We now know the names of all five leaders competing in the first Women’s Premier League after Lanning was appointed as the Delhi Capitals’ captain.
Alyssa Healy will head the UP Warriorz, while Harmanpreet will skipper the Mumbai Indians. RCB will be led by Smriti Mandhana, and Gujarat Giants will be led by Beth Mooney.
Seeing Lanning perform as the captain of DC will be interesting. She has excelled in the women’s game as a leader. Given that they have won everything, the current Australian women’s cricket team is praised as being among the finest in the world. Lanning’s team has won every ICC trophy, from the ODI World Cup to the T20 World Cup. They did, in fact, complete a three-peat by winning the T20 WC 2023, earning three consecutive trophies.
