“More details on Women’s IPL will follow in the due course,” confirms Sourav Ganguly

The long wait for the Women’s Indian Premier League (W-IPL) to get underway is finally nearing an end. As reported earlier, it’s understood that the BCCI has reserved a window in March 2023 for the inaugural edition of the women’s IPL, and the process for the show to get started is underway.

Women’s T20 Challenge to be held in May 2022, confirms Sourav Ganguly

Gaurav Gupta in his piece for the Times of India (TOI) quoted a bit from the Broad of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President, Mr Sourav Ganguly’s email to state associations, which read, “The BCCI is currently working on the much-awaited Women’s IPL. We are expecting to start the first season early next year. More details will follow in the due course.”

The three-team competition (Women’s T20 Challenge) that the BCCI has been conducting for a few years now has recorded excellent viewership and in no time turned out to be a viewers’ choice which saw the soft voices of wanting a fully-fledged W-IPL get louder and with that soon expected to come to life, there’s also a bonus from the BCCI President to women’s cricket fans.

Mr President in his email further wrote, “We are glad to introduce a girls u-15 tournament from this season. Women’s cricket has seen phenomenal growth across the world and our national team has been performing well. This new tournament will create a pathway for our girls to play at the international level.”

It simply will be a very fitting time for the U-15 tournament to get underway and this really is a piece of welcoming news as the International Cricket Council (ICC) too are getting started with the U-19 World Cup for Women and heading forward, this farsighted decision will prove only gold for India in times to come.

BCCI Secretary, Mr Jay Shah early this year said, “I am thrilled at the kind of response we have got from stakeholders. Multiple existing IPL teams have enquired and expressed serious interest in owning W-IPL franchises,” hinting toward the launch of the W-IPL.

The soon-to-begin, domestic tournament this time around sees the reintroduction of Senior Inter-Zonal T20 and One-Dayers into the cricketing calendar. The BCCI also has scheduled dates for the inaugural edition of a tournament for the U-16 girls and in the process, are looking forward to building a bench strength for the future U-19 games.

The U-19 games too have made it to the schedule and will be played from the 1st to the 17th of October keeping in mind the inaugural edition of the ICC U-19 T20 World Cup that’s scheduled to be played early next year in South Africa.
