Anjum Chopra, former team India captain gave a strong statement on team India’s performance during the 2022 Women’s World Cup. As reported by PTI, Anjum Chopra straight away said that team India ‘’never looked like title contenders” during the tournament.
From their standards, Team India had a horrible world cup campaign as they were eliminated in the league stage and finished 5th on the points table. They won just 3 of their 7 matches and lost all their matches against strong teams like Australia, England, South Africa, and New Zealand.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with PTI, Chopra shared her opinion on team India’s World Cup campaign. She said, “Team India came to NZ before the World Cup and played 6 matches. Still, they never looked in the contest and there was a lack of intent from the side. I expected them to make it to the Semis. But, there were several issues like strike rotation, middle-order collapse, etc. It is the responsibility of the coaches and staff to help the players get back their lost confidence, especially after a bad day on the field.”
Chopra also felt that the team is not “fit enough” when compared to the fitness standards of Australia and England. She also added that team India must come out of its “legacy of poor decisions” as early as possible so that there’s growth in the team’s performance.

When asked about the next captain of team India, Chopra backed Harmanpreet Kaur to become the captain of all the formats. As she’s already been a captain of the T20 side. She needs to be given the charges instead of giving them to a new face.
Overall, Chopra was extremely happy with the overall performance of teams in the world cup. She’s happy to see 270 is a par score in women’s cricket and is delighted to see teams trying to score 300+ consistently. She feels that women’s cricket has improved and will become better as time goes on.
