The BCCI has declared that the Indian Women’s team fielding coach Abhay Sharma and trainer Naresh Ramdas would not accompany the team for the Australia tour. It was surprising news even for the players as both Abhay and Naresh did not enter the bio-bubble in Bengaluru ahead of the Australian tour.
Sharma is among the support staff at the National Cricket Academy. He has accompanied the Indian women during the South Africa and UK tour. He worked very well with the players and also gave them one-on-one sessions. His extensive efforts helped improve Indian Women’s fielding by leaps and bounds. He was highly appreciated by Test and ODI captain Mithali Raj as well as by T20 skipper Harmanpreet Kaur.
Harmanpreet told PTI, “Earlier also, we used to make a lot of effort but the little adjustments that Abhay Sir has done with our fielding, the individual sessions that he has taken with the players that have helped. The most important point is that he judged every player where she can do better fielding, so we are getting results day by day from the effort that we have put in, which Is a great positive.”
The NCA support staff is often rotated. It is speculated that Sharma could be assigned to work with the U-19 junior cricketer’s squad that was sent to South Africa in the previous edition.
However, from the UK tour, former Indian opener SS Das retained his position as batting coach and head coach Ramesh Powar took care of the bowling department. In an interview with PTI, the BCCI stated, “The names of new fielding coach and trainer will be approved shortly.”
