Nirendra Hirwani appointed as spin consultant for India Women’s Cricket team

Considering the vital role of spinners in the country’s international team, particularly in the women’s game, the Indian team management hired Nirendra Hirwani, former India international, as a spin consultant.

Hirwani, a former leg-spinner, played 17 Tests and 18 ODIs for India between 1988 and 1992 and is currently working as the spin coach at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

The move is said to be in line with the aim to bring parity between men and women team where there is still a need to provide a dedicated supported staff. A BCCI official told, “It is not a full-time role since he is busy at the National Cricket Academy. He will travel with the team on and off. He also worked with them briefly during the team’s recent camp at NCA”.

India Women are scheduled to take on South Africa in a home series in September before the start of a hectic international schedule leading into the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
