In a piece of great news, India women’s team will be playing two Test matches this year with the second one being against Australia. It came into notice yesterday that the Indian Women’s team was set to fly to Australia for a bilateral series in September 2021. Now, the two teams will be seen playing a solitary Test match, which also means that India would play a test in Australia for the first time in 15 years.
The last time India played Australia in Australia was back in 2006 and the hosts won the series in Adelaide. In total, Australia and India have played 5 tests so far with the former winning 4 games and one game ending in a draw. Also, the Adelaide Test was the last time that the two faced each other in a Test match.
This would be a first for India as they’re set to play two test matches in a calendar year, something that has never happened since 2014. Also, captain Mithali Raj will get this opportunity to lead her team in two test matches in the same year.
Team India women will be playing a Test match after almost 7 years as they tour England for a one-off test, a three-match ODI, and as many T20Is, starting 16th June in Bristol. After concluding the series, they’ll prepare for their Australia tour but a confirmation from Cricket Australia and BCCI is pending.
The event came to notice when Australia’s Megan Schutt hinted to the listeners on No Balls: The Cricket Podcast, hosted by Kate Cross and Alex Hartley as she was heard mentioning the upcoming India tour to Australia. “So, there’s a couple of camps. I believe we are doing one in Darwin, which will be really cool… and then the tour against India. And then pretty much from there, things get crazy with Big Bash, WNCL, Ashes, World Cup, and hopefully the Commonwealth Games.”
Originally, an ODI was supposed to happen in January but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, a three-match T20I and a test match have been added to the tour. This year will prove very beneficial for India as the players will keep themselves busy with back-to-back tournaments till the World Cup 2022.
