Georgia Plimmer and Maddy Green Set New Zealand Women’s Record Partnership vs Australia

Georgia Plimmer and Maddy Green gave New Zealand a record-breaking moment in the first T20 International against Australia at North Sydney Oval. Their unbeaten 127-run partnership for the third wicket became New Zealand’s highest-ever women’s T20 partnership against Australia. It came after the White Ferns lost two early wickets and needed to steady their innings. Together, the batters faced 80 balls and helped their side finish on 162/2 from 20 overs. Their stand became the main achievement of New Zealand’s batting effort.

New Zealand’s innings was under pressure by the seventh over, when the score stood at 35 for 2. Flora Devonshire was dismissed for one, bowled by Garth, while captain Amelia Kerr made nine before being caught by Hamilton off Sutherland. The early wickets left Plimmer and Green with the task of rebuilding the innings. They needed to keep the scoreboard moving without giving Australia another chance. The pair handled that challenge and gradually shifted the innings in New Zealand’s favour.

Plimmer, the 22-year-old opener, took responsibility for holding the innings together. She finished unbeaten on a career-high 85 from 68 balls, with 10 fours and one six. Her strike rate was 125.00. She kept scoring steadily after the early losses and stayed at the crease until the end. The innings marked a personal best for Plimmer and gave New Zealand the stability it needed. It also allowed Green to settle in and attack when opportunities came.

Green brought a quicker pace to the partnership, finishing not out on 56 from 37 balls. She hit six fours and one six, with a strike rate of 151.35. While Plimmer faced more deliveries and anchored the innings, Green added momentum through her attacking shots. Their contrasting approaches worked well together, helping New Zealand score freely without losing another wicket. The pair put on 127 runs from 80 balls, carrying the team to 162/2 after the full 20 overs.

The partnership was especially important because it began when New Zealand were 35 for 2 in the seventh over. From that position, Plimmer and Green added 127 runs without being separated. Plimmer’s 85 and Green’s 56 accounted for the stand, which became New Zealand’s highest-ever women’s T20 partnership against Australia. Their effort turned an uncertain start into a competitive total. It also meant Australia had no further success with the ball before the innings ended.

The stand came during a period of change for the White Ferns, following the recent international retirements of Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates. Plimmer and Green’s partnership offered an encouraging sign as New Zealand moves into a new era. Their performance gave the team a record to take from the series opener and showed how two batters could rebuild after early wickets. The partnership remained the central story of New Zealand’s innings, even though the team could not secure a win.

Australia chased down the target, winning by two wickets with seven balls remaining and taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The hosts lost seven wickets for 62 runs during a late collapse but still completed the chase. Plimmer was named Player of the Match for her unbeaten 85. New Zealand could not turn the record stand into victory, but the partnership remained a major achievement from the opener. Plimmer and Green’s 127-run effort set a new benchmark against Australia and gave the White Ferns an important milestone to carry forward.
