BCB Appoints Nahida Akter as Bangladesh Women’s New T20I Captain for One-Year Term

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed left-arm spinner Nahida Akter as the new captain of the Bangladesh women’s T20I team for a one-year term, replacing Nigar Sultana Joty. The decision marks a change in leadership for the side as it looks to strengthen its performances in the shortest format. Batter Sobhana Mostary has been named vice-captain, completing the team’s new leadership group.

Nahida’s appointment comes after she served as Joty’s deputy since 2022, giving her several years of experience within the team’s leadership setup. The left-arm spinner has established herself as one of Bangladesh’s most dependable bowlers, particularly in T20 internationals, where her ability to take wickets has made her an important part of the attack.

The 25-year-old has claimed 132 wickets in 113 women’s T20Is, making her Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker in the format. She has also taken 81 wickets in 65 women’s ODIs, highlighting her effectiveness across both white-ball formats. Her international experience and consistent performances with the ball will be important as she takes on the responsibility of leading the side.

Meanwhile, Joty will continue as Bangladesh’s ODI captain despite relinquishing the T20I role. The change will allow her to focus more on her individual batting performances in the shorter format while continuing to lead the team in 50-over cricket. During her tenure as T20I captain, Bangladesh won 32 of the 82 matches played under her leadership.

The appointment of Sobhana Mostary as vice-captain adds further experience to the leadership group. The batter has scored 1,160 runs in 72 women’s T20Is, giving Bangladesh another established international player to support Nahida as she settles into the captaincy.

Nahida’s appointment represents an important opportunity for Bangladesh women’s cricket to build on its existing strengths while developing greater consistency in T20 internationals. With her experience as a senior bowler and former vice-captain, she will be expected to bring clarity to the team’s plans and help guide the side through the challenges ahead.

The one-year term will provide an opportunity to assess the new leadership combination and its impact on Bangladesh’s results. For Nahida, the challenge will be to translate her impressive individual record into successful team performances while maintaining the standards that have made her one of the country’s leading women’s cricketers.
