In the opening fixture of the CSA Women Pro20 Series at Cape Town, South Western Districts Women (SWD Women) clashed with Western Province Women (WPR Women) in a high-octane contest that delivered thrilling action right down to the final over.

South Western Districts Women set out to establish an imposing platform, with openers Courtney Gounden and Mignon du Preez walking out to face a disciplined Western Province attack. The early phase saw a cautious start before Mignon du Preez broke the shackles with two quick boundaries in a rapid 11 off 6 balls. However, Oluhle Siyo struck the first blow for Western Province, removing du Preez caught by Tunnicliffe with the team score at 24. Just eight balls later, Kayla Reyneke made her presence felt by dismissing Courtney Gounden for a gritty 9 off 20 balls, caught by Jones to leave South Western Districts Women at 24/2.
The middle-order rebuild rested heavily on Annerie Dercksen, who stepped up with a fluent, counter-attacking knock. While Babette de Leede (5 off 11) fell early to Delmi Tucker, caught by Siyo to reduce South Western Districts to 35/3, Dercksen found stable footing and began finding the boundaries with authority. Verunissa Reddy added a breezy 13 off 8 balls (2 fours) before falling to Sinelethu Yaso at 69/4. Zintle Kula then chipped in with 10 off 8 balls before becoming Reyneke’s second victim at 86/5. Despite losing partners, Dercksen compiled a punchy 43 off 28 balls, striking 6 fours and a six, before Reyneke brilliantly held a return catch to claim her third wicket and send Dercksen back at 103/6.
With the innings hanging in the balance, Izel Cilliers anchored the late overs with a solid 24 off 24 balls. However, the real grandstand finish came from Nicolien Janse van Rensburg, who unleashed an unbeaten 27 off just 14 deliveries (1 four, 2 sixes), alongside Kiara Fisher’s explosive 6* off 2 balls. Cilliers was removed late by Tucker (2/23 in 4 overs), but the late flurry pushed South Western Districts Women past the 150-mark.
Western Province’s bowling effort was spearheaded by Kayla Reyneke, who picked up 3 for 14 in her 4 overs, supported by Delmi Tucker’s 2 for 23, Sinelethu Yaso’s 1 for 20, and Oluhle Siyo’s 1 for 24. Leah Jones went wicketless with 0/43, while N Vezi Kbw conceded 9 in her single over and Nadine de Klerk gave away 24 runs in 3 overs without taking a wicket, allowing South Western Districts Women to cap off their innings at 159/7 in 20 overs.
Chasing a target of 160 runs for victory, Western Province Women endured a shaky start. Opener Lara Goodall struck 3 crisp boundaries in her 12 off 11 balls before Jané Winster trapped her lbw at 15/1. Faye Tunnicliffe made 9 off 8 balls before being caught by Cilliers off the bowling of Nicolien Janse van Rensburg, leaving the chase at 43/2. Sensing the urgency, Nadine de Klerk went on an absolute rampage, hammering 43 off just 22 balls, featuring 7 fours and a maximum at a staggering strike rate of 195.45. She dominated a dangerous partnership with Kayla Reyneke before Zintle Kula broke the stand, catching de Klerk off her own bowling with the score at 76/3.
South Western Districts Women tightened their grip immediately after the breakthrough, as Kiara Fisher dismissed Leah Jones for 2 at 79/4. Oluhle Siyo tried to steady the ship alongside Reyneke with a 11 off 12 balls, but Fisher struck again to have Siyo caught by Cilliers at 105/5. Reyneke held one end together with a well-fought 45 off 42 balls (5 fours), but as the required rate skyrocketed, Delmi Tucker (7 off 8) fell to Annerie Dercksen at 129/6. Reyneke’s valiant stay ended in the final over via a run-out by Dercksen and Janse van Rensburg at 145/7. Yandiswa Mangele (7* off 13) and Erin Scrooby (1* off 1) remained unbeaten as Western Province fell short.
South Western Districts’ defense was orchestrated by exceptional bowling spells. Kiara Fisher led the attack with 2 for 26 in 4 overs, while Nicolien Janse van Rensburg was remarkably economical with 1 for 19 in her 4 overs. Annerie Dercksen provided fantastic support with 1 for 20, alongside Jané Winster (1 for 29) and Zintle Kula (1 for 29). Lucian Swartz bowled a single high-scoring over for 19 runs. Restricting Western Province to 147/7 in their 20 overs, South Western Districts Women sealed an exciting 12-run victory to kick off their tournament campaign on a high.
