South Africa Women began their historic five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe Women with a composed six-wicket victory at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, chasing down 117 with 41 balls to spare. The first-ever T20I series between the two sides is a significant moment for women’s cricket in Africa, with South Africa travelling to Zimbabwe for the maiden bilateral contest between the neighbours.
Zimbabwe Women were asked to build their innings from the very beginning, but South Africa’s new-ball attack immediately put the hosts under pressure. Sharne Mayers and Nyasha Gwanzura opened the batting, although the partnership lasted only until the second over. Nthabiseng Nini struck in the second over to remove Gwanzura for 3 off 6 balls, leaving Zimbabwe at 4/1 after 1.1 overs. Kelis Ndlovu was unable to settle either, falling to Nini for a duck just two deliveries later as Zimbabwe slipped to 5/2. The early breakthroughs gave South Africa control of the innings and forced Zimbabwe’s middle order to rebuild.
Mayers and Beloved Biza attempted to steady the innings, but the recovery was short-lived. Mayers managed only 5 from 3 balls before Kayla Reyneke removed her in the third over, with Zimbabwe reduced to 11/3. Loreen Tshuma joined Biza but could contribute only a single run before Eliz-Mari Marx accounted for her at 12/4 in the 3.3rd over. With four wickets down for just 12 runs, Zimbabwe were in serious trouble and desperately needed a substantial partnership.
That responsibility fell on Biza and Modester Mupachikwa, who produced Zimbabwe’s first meaningful stand of the innings. The pair added 35 runs for the fifth wicket, taking the hosts from 12/4 to 47/5. Biza provided some much-needed aggression, scoring 13 from 17 deliveries, including two fours, before she was dismissed by Reyneke in the eighth over. Mupachikwa, however, continued to fight and found an able partner in Michelle Mavunga. Their sixth-wicket partnership added another 34 runs, taking Zimbabwe to 81 before Mavunga was dismissed by Annerie Dercksen for 21 off 18 balls, including two fours and a six.
Mupachikwa remained the key figure in Zimbabwe’s lower-order resistance. Alongside Nomvelo Sibanda, she added 24 runs for the seventh wicket, taking the score to 105. Reyneke eventually ended Mupachikwa’s impressive effort at 36 from 43 balls, an innings that included five fours and a six. Sibanda then fell for 15 from 16 deliveries, also to Dercksen, leaving Zimbabwe at 105/8. Christine Mutasa was dismissed without scoring, while Tendai Makusha contributed a quick 1 before becoming the final wicket to fall. Lindokuhle Mabhero remained unbeaten on 2, but Zimbabwe could only reach 116 all out in 19.3 overs.
South Africa’s bowling performance was led by Nini and Reyneke, who claimed three wickets apiece. Nthabiseng Nini finished with excellent figures of 3.3-0-17-3, while Kayla Reyneke returned 4-0-29-3. Eliz-Mari Marx also impressed with 3-1-9-1, while Annerie Dercksen picked up 2/15 from her three overs. Seshnie Naidu conceded 28 runs without a wicket in four overs, while Caitlin Wyngaard returned 2-0-16-0. The disciplined bowling effort ensured Zimbabwe never found the sustained momentum needed to post a competitive total.
Chasing 117, South Africa made a cautious start as captain Laura Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch opened the innings. Zimbabwe managed an early breakthrough when Nyasha Gwanzura dismissed Wolvaardt for 6 from seven balls, with the South African captain departing at 7/1 in the second over. Bosch, however, immediately took responsibility for the chase and began finding the boundary regularly.
Bosch was joined by Nondumiso Shangase, and the pair rebuilt the South African innings with an important 68-run second-wicket partnership. Shangase played a supporting role while Bosch accelerated, striking 11 fours and three sixes during her outstanding innings. Shangase eventually fell to Loreen Tshuma for 18 off 22 balls, but by then South Africa had moved to 75/2 and the required run rate was no longer a concern.
Faye Tunnicliffe arrived next and contributed a brief 1 before being dismissed by Michelle Mavunga, leaving South Africa at 98/3. Bosch continued to dominate and was joined by Annerie Dercksen, who helped her finish the chase. Their 18-run fourth-wicket partnership took South Africa to the brink of victory before Bosch was finally dismissed by Gwanzura for a magnificent 83 from 43 balls. Her innings featured 11 fours and three sixes, at a staggering strike rate of 193.02.
By the time Bosch departed at 116/4 after 12.6 overs, the result was already effectively decided. Dercksen, unbeaten on 2, and Kayla Reyneke, who finished unbeaten without facing a ball, completed the chase on the very next delivery as South Africa reached 117/4 in 13.1 overs, winning by six wickets with 41 balls remaining.
For Zimbabwe, Gwanzura was the pick of the bowlers with 2/19 from four overs, while Beloved Biza conceded nine runs from her over without taking a wicket. Tendai Makusha bowled one over for 13, Lindokuhle Mabhero conceded 36 from three overs, and Loreen Tshuma and Michelle Mavunga claimed one wicket apiece. Christine Mutasa bowled 0.1 overs and conceded just one run.
The result gives South Africa Women a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series, while Zimbabwe will look to regroup quickly before the second T20I at Queens Sports Club on September 13.
