Welsh Fire Women produced a composed all-round performance to defeat London Spirit Women by 15 runs in a closely fought Women’s Hundred contest in Cardiff. The match had plenty of momentum swings, with Welsh Fire recovering from a shaky start to post a competitive score before their bowlers kept London Spirit under sustained pressure. Georgia Wareham’s excellent half-century proved decisive, while Grace Harris, Orla Prendergast, Heather Graham and Sophia Smale played important roles with the ball as Welsh Fire defended their total successfully. London Spirit’s chase also featured useful contributions from several batters, but regular wickets prevented them from building the partnership needed to complete a successful run chase.
Welsh Fire began their innings with Georgia Voll and Sarah Bryce, but the opening partnership was short-lived. Voll struck four boundaries in her 9-ball 17 before she was dismissed by Charis Pavely, with London Spirit making the breakthrough when the score reached 18 from 10 balls. Sarah Bryce continued to attack alongside Freya Kemp, and the pair added 37 runs to take Welsh Fire to 55 before Kemp became the second wicket. Kemp made an aggressive 26 from 14 balls, including five fours, giving the innings an early boost at a strike rate of 185.71. Bryce then fell at 50 balls for 17, leaving Welsh Fire needing a stabilising partnership in the middle overs.
That responsibility was taken up by Georgia Wareham and Orla Prendergast. Wareham played the anchor role brilliantly while continuing to find the boundary, eventually producing the defining innings of the Welsh Fire batting effort. Prendergast contributed 12 from 14 balls, but her dismissal at 79 balls brought an end to a 31-run partnership that had moved the score from 74 to 105. Heather Graham was unable to settle in and was dismissed for a two-ball duck, leaving Welsh Fire at 106 for five. Em Arlott then added two from four balls before falling with the score on 114, putting further pressure on Wareham and the lower order. Wareham, however, remained composed. She combined with Niamh Holland for an important 18-run stand, taking Welsh Fire from 114 to 132 before Wareham finally departed for a superb 50 from 34 balls.
Wareham’s innings contained six fours and a six and came at a strike rate of 147.05, making her the standout batter of the Welsh Fire innings. Abi Norgrove then joined Holland and helped the side finish strongly, with Welsh Fire closing their 100-ball innings at 138 for seven. Holland remained unbeaten on one, while Norgrove finished not out on four. The innings included nine extras, with London Spirit’s bowling attack led by Grace Harris, who claimed three wickets for 15 runs from 15 balls. Charlie Dean took two for 18, while Katie George, Hannah Rainey and Nadine de Klerk picked up one wicket each. Charis Pavely bowled six balls for 13 runs without taking a wicket.
Chasing 139, London Spirit needed a brisk start but immediately found themselves in trouble. Grace Harris was dismissed for one from four balls with the score on just two, and Marie Kelly followed for a duck, leaving the visitors two wickets down almost immediately. Amy Jones attempted to rebuild the innings and struck two boundaries in a seven-ball 10, but she was dismissed when London Spirit reached 18. Charis Pavely then provided a much-needed counterattack, scoring 18 from 13 balls with three fours, but her dismissal at 44 ended a 26-run partnership and again exposed London Spirit’s middle order.
Nadine de Klerk and Charlie Dean then tried to steady the chase. De Klerk made 11 from 13 balls, while Dean produced one of London Spirit’s most valuable innings, scoring 27 from 20 deliveries with three boundaries. Their partnership with Pavely and then each other helped London Spirit reach 72 before de Klerk was dismissed, but the wickets continued to arrive at crucial moments. Dean fell at 75, followed quickly by Katie George for three, leaving London Spirit seven wickets down at 81. Deandra Dottin and Seren Smale responded with a useful 26-run partnership, with Dottin contributing 15 from 13 balls, including a four and a six, while Smale struck 17 from 14 balls. Their stand briefly raised hopes of a late London Spirit recovery, but Smale was dismissed at 107.
Dottin then fell at 119, ending another important passage of the chase, while Hannah Rainey was dismissed for three with the total on 123. Lucy Higham remained unbeaten on eight from five balls, but there was no support left at the other end as London Spirit were bowled out for 123 from 99 balls. The result gave Welsh Fire Women a 15-run victory after a match in which their bowling attack maintained pressure throughout the chase. Grace Potts was the pick of the bowlers with 3/23, while Heather Graham finished with 2/16 and both Orla Prendergast and Sophia Smale took one wicket apiece. Georgia Wareham bagged a wicket in her 20-ball spell, conceding 29 runs.
