Five Biggest Talking Points from the WBBL 12 Schedule Announcement

With just months to go before the first ball of Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2026, the tournament schedule has offered an early glimpse of what fans can expect this summer. While the race for the title remains wide open, the fixtures itself has already created plenty of anticipation, featuring new venues under lights, high-profile rivalry clashes and several key stretches that could shape the finals race.

The most significant development is the arrival of night cricket at Junction Oval. Following the installation of permanent floodlights, the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades will finally be able to host evening fixtures at their home ground, something that has not been possible in previous editions.

The venue will launch the new season with a double-header on October 29, beginning with the Renegades taking on Sydney Thunder before the Stars face reigning champions Hobart Hurricanes under lights. Junction Oval will host six night matches during the tournament, including a Melbourne Derby, marking a new chapter for one of the league’s most recognisable venues.

The fixtures also ensures that rivalry weekend could become one of the defining moments of the regular season. On November 28, fans will be treated to both the Melbourne Derby and the Sydney Smash. The Stars and Renegades will renew their cross-town rivalry at Junction Oval before attention shifts to Drummoyne Oval, where Sydney Thunder host Sydney Sixers in prime time. With just one round of league matches remaining afterwards, both contests could have a significant bearing on finals qualification.

Another welcome return is WBBL cricket at Adelaide Oval. Adelaide Strikers will host the Melbourne Renegades under lights on November 20 in the only fixture scheduled at the iconic venue this season. Although the Strikers continue to split their home games with Karen Rolton Oval, Adelaide Oval has become one of the competition’s marquee destinations and regularly attracts some of the league’s biggest crowds.

The schedule also presents Brisbane Heat with an opportunity for a fresh start after a disappointing WBBL 11 campaign. The Heat finished at the bottom of the table without registering a victory and will begin a new era following Jess Jonassen’s decision to step down as captain. Brisbane has been handed four prime-time fixtures, including three home matches at Allan Border Field, giving the club plenty of opportunities to rebuild momentum under new leadership.

For the defending champions Hobart Hurricanes, the title defence begins with little room for error. Their opening match comes against the Stars before they quickly run into familiar opposition in Perth Scorchers, whom they defeated in last season’s final. The two sides will meet twice during the regular season, with both contests expected to be among the standout fixtures of the tournament as last year’s finalists renew their rivalry.

The Sydney Thunder will also have plenty to prove, particularly at home. Since adopting Drummoyne Oval as their base, the Thunder have struggled to consistently capitalise on home conditions. They will host four matches there this season, including the Sydney Smash, while also welcoming Brisbane Heat, Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars. Interestingly, those three teams accounted for all four of Thunder’s victories during WBBL 11, giving them reason for optimism heading into the new campaign.

The fixtures appear well suited to the Hobart Hurricanes’ home supporters. The reigning champions will play consecutive Saturday matches at Ninja Stadium against Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder before heading into a demanding closing stretch featuring clashes against Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers. Those home fixtures could prove crucial as Hobart look to secure another top-two finish and the advantage that comes with it.
