With Ireland chasing 129 against a Hayley Matthews-led West Indies at County Ground, Bristol, on 27 June 2026 (Match 27 of the 10th edition), Prendergast entered the contest needing nine runs to reach the milestone, and left no doubt, finishing with 63 off 44 balls to steer her side to a comfortable six-wicket win.

Ireland, having won the toss and opted to field, had restricted the West Indies to 128 for 7 in 20 overs. Prendergast chipped in with the ball too, returning tidy figures of 4-0-29-1 after removing Jannillea Glasgow, underlining her value as a genuine all-rounder. In the run chase, she came in at number three with Ireland 26 for 1 in the fifth over and constructed a decisive innings that combined control with well-timed aggression. Her 63 included eight fours and two sixes, and it stands as her highest score in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, the highest individual score by an Irish batter in the tournament’s history.

Orla Prendergast’s knock was not only significant for the record books but crucial in context: it powered Ireland to their first-ever World Cup victory in their 5th appearance since their tournament debut in 2014, allowing them to sign off the 2026 campaign on a real high. For her game-changing contribution with bat and ball, she was deservedly named Player of the Match.

Statistically, the performance underlines a rapid rise. Prendergast finished the 2026 tournament as Ireland’s leading run-scorer and the fifth-highest scorer overall, accumulating 181 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 125.69 and an average of 36.20, including two half-centuries. Across her T20 World Cup appearances (this was her second campaign after debuting in 2023), she has amassed 290 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 125.54 and an average of 32.22, including three fifties.

On the broader international stage, Prendergast, who made her T20I debut for Ireland on 8 August 2019 against the Netherlands in Deventer, now has 2,054 T20I runs from 83 innings (88 matches), with a strike rate of 122.77 and an average of 30.20, including 14 half-centuries. Her best T20I knock remains 80 off 51 balls against England in Dublin on 15 September 2024, an innings that helped Ireland chase 170 and earn her Player of the Match honours as it sealed a historic victory for Ireland.

At 24, Prendergast’s blend of power, timing and useful medium-pace bowling gives Ireland a genuine match-winner and a linchpin around whom their white-ball plans can be built. Crossing the 2,000-run mark so early in her career places her firmly alongside Gaby Lewis at the summit of Ireland’s T20 batting chart, but it is the timing of this landmark, delivered in a tournament setting and coupled with a match-winning all-round display, that will linger longest in memories. As Ireland looks to build on this breakthrough, Prendergast’s form and versatility offer a clear signal: Irish women’s cricket now has a young star capable of influencing games at the highest level.
