What Current Entertainment Trends Could Boost Female Cricket’s Audience?

The rising global interest in sports in the last few years has been hugely impressive. From record-breaking football attendances to surging television viewership, the appetite for female competition has never been higher. Bearing in mind this changing landscape, the biggest question is what entertainment trends are driving it and how women’s cricket can benefit.

Immersive Streaming Service Documentaries

The dramatic effect of sports documentaries on audiences has been demonstrated in several examples, creating an effective new type of marketing. By giving behind-the-scenes access to camera crews, Drive to Survive gave us a new way to look at the world of Formula 1 and introduced a wave of new fans to the sport.

Something similar happened with professional cycling when Tour de France: Unchained was screened on Netflix. By letting us see the team dynamics and the physical toll of top-level cycling, it gave us a new way of appreciating the effort that goes into the sport. A dedicated series looking at how female cricket teams prepare for games and the sacrifices they make could change the landscape and give new fans an emotional stake in the sport.

The Rise of Interactive Sports Slots

Digital casino gaming has proven to be one of the fastest-growing types of online entertainment in recent times. When we look at casino sites UK platforms, we can see that part of their success is down to the huge variety of slots offered. From farmyard action to slots based on TV game shows and mythological characters, there are many different ways of playing.

With the FIFA World Cup in full swing at the time of writing, it’s no surprise to find that many of the newest releases have a football theme. With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup also taking place at the same time, this could be an opportunity to capitalise on increased interest in the sport and introduce casino players to the game as they search for new slots with attention-grabbing images.

Inspirational Sports Movies and Narratives

We don’t need to search far to find examples of movies that have given a particular sport a popularity boost. However, the effect of blockbuster movies isn’t always as direct as we might imagine. 1992’s A League of Their Own brought the story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) to the attention of modern audiences. While it’s fair to say that it encouraged more women to play sports, it wasn’t until 2oo4 that the official USA Baseball Women’s National Team was formed.

To be successful, a movie about women’s cricket would need to focus on the inspirational stories behind the top players, such as India’s Harmanpreet Kaur, who became the first cricket player to take part in 200 T20 International matches. Fellow veteran Suzie Bates is the leading T20 run-scorer and is playing in her final tournament for New Zealand this year.

These examples show how women’s cricket could progress to the next level of popularity in different ways. If you already love the sport, it’s going to be fascinating watching how it evolves in the next few years.
