England Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt Ruled Out of Two World Cup Matches with Calf Injury

England Women have suffered a major setback in their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, with captain Nat Sciver-Brunt ruled out of the team’s next two group-stage matches due to a calf injury.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Wednesday, June 17, that Nat Sciver-Brunt has suffered a left calf muscle strain. The injury is in a similar area to the calf problem that troubled her earlier this year and forced her to miss England’s recent T20I series against New Zealand and India.

The injury occurred during England’s match against Ireland in Southampton on June 16. Sciver-Brunt was batting well and had reached 48 not out when she felt discomfort in her calf. With England close to victory and needing only nine more runs, she decided to leave the field as a precaution.

Speaking after the match, Sciver-Brunt had played down the concern, saying: “It was just precautionary. I felt a bit of tightness in my calf so I thought I’d better not push it.”

A scan was carried out on Wednesday, followed by further checks by England’s medical staff. The results confirmed a calf strain, ruling the England skipper out of the upcoming matches against Scotland and West Indies.

The news is disappointing for England, especially because Sciver-Brunt had only recently returned from the same injury. After missing several international matches earlier in the season, she worked hard to regain fitness and looked in good touch before this latest setback.

In the World Cup warm-up matches, Sciver-Brunt scored a half-century against India. She then carried that form into the tournament, making 46 not out against Sri Lanka and 48 not out against Ireland. Her performances played an important role in helping England win their opening two matches and move to the top of Group 2.

Although she will miss the next two games, England have not ruled her out of the rest of the tournament. The ECB confirmed that Sciver-Brunt will remain with the squad and continue her rehabilitation under the supervision of the England medical team.

The board also stated that her recovery will be monitored closely over the coming days before any decision is made about her return to action.

With their captain unavailable, vice-captain Charlie Dean will lead England on the field for the matches against Scotland and West Indies.

Dean has previous experience in the role after stepping in as captain during the recent series against New Zealand and India when Sciver-Brunt was unavailable. She impressed during that period and helped England maintain strong performances.

England will now hope Dean can once again guide the team successfully while their regular captain continues her recovery.

Despite losing one of their most important players, England remains in a strong position in the tournament after back-to-back wins over Sri Lanka and Ireland. However, Sciver-Brunt’s absence will be a significant challenge, given her value as both a batter and leader.

The focus will now be on her recovery, with England hoping their captain can return later in the competition as they continue their push for Women’s T20 World Cup glory.
