Nat Sciver-Brunt reached a landmark and led an emphatic England victory in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup opener at Edgbaston on 12 June 2026, becoming only the second English player after Danielle Wyatt-Hodge to pass 3,000 T20I runs while also moving clear as England’s top run-scorer in Women’s T20 World Cup history.

Entering the match 40 runs shy of the milestone, the 33-year-old all-rounder finished unbeaten on 46 from 22 balls in a destructive cameo as England posted a tournament-record 219 for 1 and beat Chamari Athapaththu’s Sri Lanka by 87 runs.

Chamari Athapaththu’s decision to field first backfired as England’s openers, Amy Jones and Danielle Wyatt-Hodge, produced the highest opening partnership ever for England in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup history, a 135-run platform that set the tone. Wyatt-Hodge, in particular, carried her big-hitting form through to a commanding 105* off 62 deliveries, an innings featuring 13 boundaries and a six, while Jones provided solid support.

When Sciver-Brunt walked in at No. 3, she needed 40 runs to reach the 3,000-mark and approached the task with characteristic power and timing: six fours and a six in a brisk, unbeaten finish that not only took her past the milestone but helped England register the highest total in Women’s T20 World Cup history.

The landmark was significant on multiple fronts. Sciver-Brunt’s list of achievements in T20 internationals now reads 3,006 runs at a strike rate of 119.90 and an average of 29.47 from 132 innings in 138 matches since her T20I debut against Pakistan at Loughborough on 5 July 2013.

In World Cup specifics, she has amassed 784 runs at a strike rate of 120.06 and an average of 41.26 in 28 innings across 30 matches for England in the tournament, overtaking former captain and current England head coach Charlotte Edwards’ mark to become England’s leading run-scorer in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup history. Sciver-Brunt has now recorded seven half-centuries in T20 World Cups, sitting just 31 runs short of Charlotte Edwards feat ahead of the clash, underlining her longevity and consistency on the game’s biggest stage.

Beyond personal milestones, England’s performance at Edgbaston was a statement of intent for the 10th edition of the tournament, which runs from 12 June to 5 July 2026. The 219/1 total is not just a record; it reflects an evolving balance in the women’s game where strike rates and sustained aggression have become decisive. Sri Lanka, chasing, were never able to recover from the onslaught and were dismissed for 132 in their 20 overs, handing England a comprehensive 87-run victory, the third-largest margin for the side in Women’s T20 World Cup history.

Nat Sciver-Brunt’s journey to this point spans seven World Cup campaigns since her tournament debut in 2014, and her role as England captain and senior all-rounder remains pivotal. Her best T20I batting display for England remains the fluent 82 off 61 balls against the West Indies at Derby on 26 September 2020, an innings that earned her Player of the Match honours. At Edgbaston, she added a different, quicker chapter to that legacy: finishing off a historic team total and, in doing so, cementing her place among England’s modern greats in T20 internationals.
