The Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) is set for a landmark expansion in 2026, with Jamaica Empress becoming the tournament’s fourth franchise. The move marks the first time since the competition’s launch in 2022 that more than three teams will participate, signaling a significant step forward in the growth of women’s franchise cricket in the Caribbean.

The fifth edition of the WCPL will be held entirely in Barbados from September 5 to 17, bringing together Jamaica Empress, Barbados Royals, Guyana Amazon Warriors, and Trinbago Knight Riders. Tournament organizers believe the expansion will enhance competition while laying the foundation for the event’s long-term development.
Since its inception, the WCPL has featured only three teams, with each side playing a limited number of matches before advancing to the final. The introduction of a fourth franchise will see a revised tournament structure. Under the new format, each team will play the other three sides once during the league phase.
The team finishing at the top of the standings will secure a direct place in the final, while the second and third-placed teams will compete in a playoff on September 16 for the remaining spot in the championship match scheduled for September 17.
Jamaica Empress will make their much-anticipated tournament debut on September 6 when they take on Guyana Amazon Warriors. The opening match of the 2026 season will be played a day earlier, featuring defending champions Barbados Royals against Trinbago Knight Riders.
The expansion is being viewed as a major milestone for women’s cricket in the region, reflecting growing interest in the sport and increasing investment in the women’s game. Officials believe the addition of Jamaica Empress will not only broaden the competition’s reach but also create more opportunities for players across the Caribbean to showcase their talent on a high-profile stage.
Beyond the immediate changes for 2026, tournament organizers have also outlined ambitious plans for the future. The WCPL has revealed its intention to expand beyond the Caribbean and welcome international franchises from 2027 onward, potentially transforming the competition into a global women’s T20 league.
“Looking ahead to 2027, the WCPL is preparing to take the next step in its evolution, with plans to welcome teams from outside the Caribbean and establish the tournament as a truly global competition,” the WCPL said in a statement.
The announcement highlights the league’s broader vision of becoming a premier destination for women’s franchise cricket. If successful, the move could attract leading international players and franchises, further raising the profile of the tournament and strengthening the Caribbean’s role in the development of the women’s game.
With a new team, an expanded format, and ambitions for global participation, the 2026 WCPL promises to be the most significant edition of the tournament to date, offering fans an exciting new chapter in the evolution of women’s cricket in the Caribbean.
