Ellyse Perry’s 64 Powers Australia Women Past England in 5-Wicket Win

Ellyse Perry struck a commanding 64 off 44 balls as Australia Women chased down 158 with ease to defeat England Women by five wickets in their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 warm-up match at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on June 9, 2026. The contest also marked Nat Sciver-Brunt’s return from a calf injury, but the England captain’s comeback lasted only seven deliveries as Australia produced a clinical all-round display ahead of the tournament.

After opting to field first, Australia made the perfect start. Megan Schutt removed Amy Jones for 2 and Kim Garth dismissed Danni Wyatt-Hodge for 4, leaving England reeling at 6/2 inside three overs. The situation worsened when Sciver-Brunt fell for 3, trapped by Alana King, as the hosts slipped to 19/3 in the fifth over.

England’s recovery was led by Alice Capsey and Heather Knight. Capsey top-scored with 45 from 36 balls, striking six boundaries, while Knight added 25(22). Their partnership steadied the innings after the early collapse, taking England past the halfway stage without further damage.

Australia’s bowlers, however, continued to keep the scoring under control. Schutt finished with 2/20 from three overs, while King was particularly effective, returning figures of 2/10 in her two-over spell. Garth conceded only 19 runs in her three overs and claimed a wicket, while Annabel Sutherland chipped in with 1/15.

England found acceleration through Freya Kemp and Dani Gibson in the closing overs. Kemp smashed 41(27), including four fours and a six, while Gibson’s unbeaten 27(16) deliveries featured three boundaries and a maximum. The pair ensured England closed on a competitive 157/6, adding valuable runs at nearly 10 an over during the death overs.

Australia’s chase began with equal intent. Beth Mooney set the tone immediately, racing to 43 from 26 deliveries with four fours and two sixes. Alongside Georgia Voll (17), she put on 51 for the opening wicket before Lauren Filer provided England with a breakthrough.

Mooney’s dismissal at 70/2 briefly offered England hope, but Perry ensured Australia never lost control of the chase. The veteran all-rounder was at her fluent best, striking nine boundaries in a 44-ball innings that combined composure with calculated aggression. Perry shared important stands through the middle overs and kept the required rate comfortably under control despite wickets falling at the other end. Ashleigh Gardner contributed 12, while Grace Harris managed only one before Sophie Ecclestone struck.

England’s bowlers struggled to build sustained pressure. Lauren Bell was the standout performer, returning 2/22 from 3.2 overs and removing both Gardner and Perry. Ecclestone claimed 1/31, while Filer picked up 1/38.

Australia reached 113/3 in the 13th over and never looked troubled thereafter. Perry eventually departed for 64 with victory all but secured, leaving Australia needing just two runs. Annabel Sutherland remained unbeaten on 8, while Tahlia McGrath finished 2 not out as the six-time champions completed the chase at 158/5 in 18.2 overs.

For England, Capsey’s 45 and Kemp’s late assault were notable positives, while Bell impressed with the ball. Australia, meanwhile, looked tournament-ready, with Schutt and King setting up the win before Perry’s match-defining half-century completed a polished performance.
