Nat Sciver-Brunt to Return as Batter in England’s Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Warm-Up vs Australia

England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt is set to make her return from injury in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup warm-up match against Australia, on May 8, handing the hosts a major boost just days before the start of their campaign on home soil.

The all-rounder has not played since suffering a calf tear while representing The Blaze in April, forcing her to miss England’s recent series against New Zealand and India. Despite her absence, England enjoyed a productive build-up to the tournament, winning both series under stand-in captain Charlie Dean and strengthening their credentials as one of the favourites for the title.

Speaking during the official World Cup launch event in London, Sciver-Brunt confirmed she is ready to return to competitive action. “I’ve been injured, which is very frustrating, but I’m back tomorrow to play against Australia,” Sciver-Brunt told former England men’s captain and Sky Sports Cricket analyst Nasser Hussain. Her comeback comes at an ideal time for England, who begin their World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston on June 12. The 32-year-old remains one of the most influential players in the women’s game, and her return adds experience and balance to a squad aiming to lift the trophy on home soil.

Sciver-Brunt revealed that her recovery has progressed well after an intensive period of rehabilitation and training. She expressed confidence in her fitness and excitement at the prospect of returning to the field after nearly two months on the sidelines. “My calf is doing well. I have been through lots of training in the last week, and beyond that. The warm-up game tomorrow will be my first time back, so I’m really excited to get back out on the pitch.”

While England will welcome their captain back into the XI, the team is expected to carefully manage her workload during the tournament. Sciver-Brunt indicated that she will initially focus on her batting rather than resume her full all-round duties immediately. “It could change, but for now, getting back as a batter is the most important thing,” she said. “We have some brilliant bowlers who are covering all of the bases. We’ll see how that goes, but at the moment I’ll be playing just as a batter.”

England’s confidence has grown considerably over the past few weeks. The squad responded impressively to Sciver-Brunt’s absence, with several players stepping up during victories over New Zealand and India. The team has also benefited from being exposed to pressure situations during those series, which management believes has strengthened their preparations for the global event.

The World Cup launch in central London highlighted the growing anticipation surrounding the tournament. Waterloo Bridge was transformed into a cricket pitch as captains from all 12 participating nations gathered to celebrate the competition’s arrival in England.

For Sciver-Brunt, the event was another reminder that the moment England have been preparing for is finally within reach. With warm-up fixtures against Australia and India still to come, attention is now firmly fixed on the opening match against Sri Lanka. “The excitement has been building for such a long time now, and the squad is ready. We’ve put in the hard work, the practice and the performances now over several months, and we just can’t wait to get out there in front of the crowds and give it everything we’ve got,” she said.

England have not won the Women’s T20 World Cup since 2009, but with their captain returning, momentum on their side and home support behind them, they will enter the tournament believing they have a genuine opportunity to end that wait and challenge for the title.
