South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt has been named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for April 2026 following a remarkable run of performances across both ODI and T20I cricket.

The Proteas batter beat Sri Lanka’s Imesha Dulani and Brazil’s Laura Cardoso to claim the monthly honour, continuing what has been an outstanding period in her international career. It is the third time Wolvaardt has received the award in the last seven months after also winning in October and December last year.
The latest recognition comes just weeks before the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England and Wales, where South Africa will be aiming to build on their recent strong form. “It feels incredible to win a third ICC Player of the Month award in such a short span of time, and I hope to continue batting with the same confidence and consistency,” Wolvaardt said after receiving the award.
The South African skipper enjoyed an exceptional April with the bat, beginning with the ODI series against New Zealand. In two matches, she scored 138 runs at an average of 69.00, providing stability at the top of the order against the reigning ODI world champions. Wolvaardt then produced an even more dominant display during South Africa’s T20I series against India. Across five matches, she amassed 330 runs at an average of 82.50 and an impressive strike rate of 168.36. Her performances included one century and three half-centuries as South Africa secured a commanding 4-1 series victory.
“This has been one of the most enjoyable phases of my career and it’s especially satisfying to have achieved success across formats,” Wolvaardt said.
Her most memorable innings came in the third T20I against India, where she played one of the finest knocks of her career. Chasing a target of 192, Wolvaardt smashed 115 runs from just 53 deliveries to guide South Africa to a nine-wicket victory. The innings featured 14 boundaries and five sixes, with Wolvaardt scoring at a strike rate of 216.98. It was also her third century in T20 internationals and further strengthened her reputation as one of the leading batters in women’s cricket.
South Africa’s dominant series win over India has significantly boosted confidence within the squad ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup next month. Wolvaardt’s consistency at the top of the order is expected to play a major role in the team’s campaign in England and Wales.
“What makes this award even more special is that these performances came against the reigning World Cup and T20 World Cup champions, which is something I truly cherish,” she said. The 27-year-old has continued to evolve as both a batter and captain, leading South Africa through a strong period in international cricket. Her calm leadership and aggressive batting approach have made her one of the most influential players in the women’s game.
Wolvaardt also acknowledged the support she has received from teammates and staff during her recent run of form. “I’m grateful to my team-mates for their constant support, and I hope to carry this form into the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup next month in England and Wales,” she said.
The ICC award caps another successful month for the Proteas skipper, whose performances have placed South Africa among the leading contenders heading into the global tournament. With Wolvaardt in outstanding touch, South Africa will head to the Women’s T20 World Cup with growing belief and momentum.
