Sainavi Kambalapalli Stars With Bat and Ball as USA Beat Italy by 9 Wickets

In the 17th Match of the ICC Women’s T20I Challenge Trophy 2026 in Kigali, Rwanda, USA Women produced a commanding all-round performance to register a convincing 9-wicket victory over Italy Women, chasing down the target of 100 with 23 balls to spare. It was a clinical display from the United States of America Women, led brilliantly by Player of the Match Sainavi Kambalapalli, whose unbeaten half-century and two crucial wickets ensured her side stayed in complete control throughout the contest. The win further strengthened the USA Women’s campaign in the tournament, while the Italy Women were left searching for answers after struggling to build momentum in both innings.

Italy Women’s innings began on a shaky note as they lost Emilia Bartram early for just 8 runs off 11 balls. She managed to strike a six but could not convert her start, falling with the score at 34/1 in the 5.1st over after being caught by Taranum Chopra off Sainavi Kambalapalli. However, opener Alexia Kontopirakis stood firm at the other end and played the anchor role beautifully. She looked composed against the new ball, rotating strike smartly and finding boundaries when required. Alongside her, Ilenia Sims added 9 runs from 18 deliveries, but the partnership never truly accelerated as Ritu Singh broke through, dismissing Sims at 51/2 in the 10.2nd over. Italy Women were struggling to maintain the run rate as the USA bowling unit kept things tight.

Methnara Rathnayake could only manage 2 runs from 8 balls before Taranum Chopra removed her at 57/3 in the 11.6th over, further putting pressure on the middle order. Alexia continued to hold one end together and found some support from Chathurika Mahamalage, who scored 9 runs off 13 deliveries. Their stand briefly hinted at recovery, but Sainavi returned to dismiss Mahamalage for 9, caught by Chetna Pagydyala at 83/4 in the 16.6th over. The key moment came shortly after when Alexia Kontopirakis, who had battled hard for her 49 off 56 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes, was trapped lbw by Aditiba Chudasama at 85/5 in the 17.6th over, missing out on a deserving half-century by just one run.

Once Alexia departed, Italy Women completely lost their finishing push. Kumudu Peddrick added a handy 13 off 12 balls with two boundaries, but Emma Moore was run out for 2, Dilaisha Nanayakkara fell for a duck, and the lower order failed to contribute. Italy Women closed at 99/8 in their 20 overs, a total that felt below par considering the conditions. The USA bowling attack was disciplined and shared the wickets effectively. Sainavi Kambalapalli was outstanding with figures of 2/12 in 4 overs, while Taranum Chopra also impressed with 2/15 from her 4 overs. Aditiba Chudasama delivered an economical spell of 1/15 in 4 overs, and Ritu Singh contributed with 1/18 in her 3 overs. Maahi Madhavan also chipped in with 1/13, ensuring Italy never found late momentum.

Chasing 100, USA Women approached the innings with confidence and clarity. Openers Sainavi Kambalapalli and Chetna Pagydyala gave their side the perfect platform with a superb 89-run opening partnership. The pair mixed caution with aggression beautifully, making sure there were no early setbacks. Chetna was elegant in her strokeplay, scoring a fluent 36 off 39 deliveries with 3 boundaries, while Sainavi looked increasingly dominant as the innings progressed. She found gaps effortlessly, punished loose deliveries, and controlled the chase with maturity far beyond her years.

Italy Women finally got a breakthrough when Chathurika Mahamalage dismissed Chetna Pagydyala at 89/1 in the 14.2nd over, but by then the game had almost slipped away. Sainavi remained calm and carried on the job, bringing up a brilliant unbeaten 52 off 51 balls, decorated with 7 boundaries. She found excellent support from Isani Vaghela, who stayed unbeaten on 7 off 7 deliveries and ensured there were no further hiccups. The pair completed the chase comfortably as the USA Women reached 101/1 in just 16.1 overs.

Italy’s bowlers tried hard but lacked enough scoreboard pressure to defend. Chathurika Mahamalage was the lone wicket-taker and was excellent with figures of 1/7 in 4 overs, maintaining control throughout her spell. Dilaisha Nanayakkara bowled tidily for 3 overs, conceding just 13 runs, while Emma Moore and Kumudu Peddrick were also reasonably economical. However, the lack of breakthroughs from bowlers like Ilenia Sims and Emilia Bartram made life easier for the USA batters, who dictated terms from start to finish.

This USA Women vs Italy Women match highlighted the importance of partnerships and finishing power in T20 cricket. While Alexia Kontopirakis fought a lone battle for Italy Women, USA Women displayed a far more complete team performance. Sainavi Kambalapalli’s all-round brilliance with both bat and ball made the difference, and her match-winning contribution was rightly rewarded with the Player of the Match award. With this dominant win, USA Women continue to build strong momentum in the ICC Women’s T20I Challenge Trophy 2026.
