Ishani Vaghela, Chetna Pagydyala Fifties Power USA Women to 72-Run Win Over Vanuatu

The 14th match of the ICC Women’s T20I Challenge Trophy 2026 in Rwanda unfolded as a compelling contest where USA Women gradually tightened their grip to outplay Vanuatu Women in a well-rounded performance. Rather than a blazing start, the innings began on a cautious note, with early pressure applied by Vanuatu’s disciplined bowling unit.

The breakthrough came almost immediately as Sainavi Kambalapalli was trapped lbw by Vanessa Vira for 0, leaving USA Women at 1/0 in just 0.4 overs. From there, the recovery was led by a composed and match-defining partnership between Chetna Pagydyala and Isani Vaghela. The duo stitched together a crucial 109-run stand for the second wicket, stabilising the innings and then accelerating with smart stroke play.

Pagydyala anchored the innings with a fluent 54 off 48 balls, striking seven boundaries and rotating the strike effectively. Vaghela, on the other hand, showcased greater aggression, scoring a brilliant 54 off just 41 deliveries, including five fours and three sixes. Their partnership shifted the momentum completely in favour of the USA Women, taking them to 110/2 by the 14.3-over mark when Vaghela departed, caught by Vira off Natalia Kakor.

Even after the breakthrough, the scoring rate didn’t dip significantly. Pooja Ganesh added a quick 19 off 15 balls, contributing to a 15-run partnership with Pagydyala before she was bowled by Rachel Andrew at 125/3 in 16.4 overs. Gargi Bhogle then provided a late flourish, remaining unbeaten on 24 off just 12 balls, striking at an impressive rate and forming a handy 37-run partnership with Ganesh and later the lower order. USA Women finished strongly, posting 162/4 in their 20 overs, with extras contributing 11 runs.

Vanuatu’s bowling effort had its moments, led by Vanessa Vira who picked up 2 wickets for 25 runs in her 4 overs, maintaining control early on. Natalia Kakor and Rachel Andrew chipped in with a wicket each, though they were slightly expensive. The rest of the bowling attack, including Susan Stephen and Nasimana Navaika, struggled to contain the scoring during the middle overs, allowing USA to build momentum.

Chasing 163, Vanuatu Women never quite found the rhythm required for such a target. They lost their first wicket early, with Susan Stephen dismissed lbw by Lekha Shetty for 4, making it 12/1 in 1.5 overs. Valenta Langiatu showed intent at the top, scoring 25 off 21 balls with five boundaries, but lacked consistent support from the other end. Rachel Andrew (4), Selina Solman (retired not-out), walked back early, leaving Vanuatu reeling at 31/3 inside the powerplay.

A brief resistance came through a partnership between Nasimana Navaika and Gillian Chilia, who added 26 runs for the fifth wicket. Navaika scored 20 off 29 balls while Chilia contributed 17 off 23, but the required run rate kept climbing. The middle-order collapse continued as wickets fell at regular intervals, from 4/64 to 7/79, effectively ending any hopes of a comeback.

The USA bowling unit delivered a disciplined and collective performance. Lekha Shetty was the standout, claiming 4 wickets for just 16 runs in her 4 overs, dismantling the middle order. Sainavi Kambalapalli impressed with figures of 1/10 in 4 overs, applying pressure through tight lines. Ritu Singh (1/14), Tarannum Chopra (1/12), and Maahi Madhavan (1/14) all contributed with timely breakthroughs, ensuring Vanuatu never built sustained partnerships.

In the end, Vanuatu Women finished at 90/8 in their 20 overs, falling short by 72 runs. The match was a testament to the USA Women’s all-around dominance, highlighted by a match-winning partnership, impactful bowling spells, and sharp execution in key moments. Isani Vaghela was rightly named Player of the Match for her crucial half-century that laid the foundation for a commanding victory.
