The Harmanpreet Kaur-led India were in a do-or-die situation after being 2-0 down in the Durban leg of the ongoing away five-match T20I series against the Laura Wolvaardt-led Proteas. There were a few changes for both sides as the series moved to Johannesburg for the decider 3rd T20I on 22nd April 2026 (Thursday).

Kayla Reyneke returned to the side for the hosts, replacing Anneke Bosch, while Ayabonga Khaka made way for Ayanda Hlubi in the starting 11. India made as many as three changes: Bharti Fulmali replaced Anushka Sharma, Kashvee Gautam came in for Kranti Gaud, and Shree Charani made way for Renuka Singh.
The home skipper, Laura Wolvaardt, won yet another toss and opted to bowl first at the Wanderers. The Indian openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana survived the powerplay for the first time in the series, scoring at a rate of over 8 runs an over. Left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba broke the 68-run opening stand by sending an ominous Smriti Mandhana (37 off 25 balls) back to the pavilion in the 9th over of the innings, providing the first breakthrough for South Africa.
Mlaba also removed Jemimah Rodrigues on the very next delivery for a golden duck, reducing India to 68/2 in the 9th over of the innings. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur partnered with opening batter Shafali Verma at the crease, and the duo stitched the highest 3rd wicket stand worth 73 runs for India against the Proteas in South Africa in the format. Nadine de Klerk broke the stand by sending Shafali Verma (64 off 46 balls) back to the pavilion in the 16th over of the innings, providing the 3rd breakthrough for her side.
Wicket-keeper batter Richa Ghosh (18* off 10 balls) partnered skipper Harmanpreet Kaur at the crease, and the duo provided solid finishing touches courtesy of a 50-run stand for the 4th wicket, with India ending at 192/4, their highest total against South Africa in the format. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (66 off 38 balls) was run out on the final ball of the innings, after a counter-attacking half-century, her 1st against the Proteas in the format.
Nonkululeko Mlaba (4-0-31-2), Nadine de Klerk (3-0-27-1), and Annerie Dercksen (2-0-13-0) were impressive with the ball for South Africa.
Hunting their record highest chase in the T20I format, the South African openers, skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus, launched a brutal display of power-hitting, scoring at 12 runs an over in the powerplay, as the Indian bowlers kept searching for answers. The fearless assault continued, and the partnership soared to 183 for the opening stand, their highest against India in the format.
The partnership took them to the brink of a historic win. Off-spinner Shreyanka Patil finally provided some respite by dismissing the opposition skipper, Laura Wolvaardt (115 off 53 balls), but the bulk of the damage was already done as she registered her joint career-best score in the format. Sune Luus stayed unbeaten on 64* (42 balls), registering her 2nd consecutive half-century in the series, guiding her side over the line by 9 wickets in hand and 21 balls to spare, as South Africa went 3-0 up to seal the five-match T20I series with a couple of games to go in the series.
Shreyanka Patil (3-0-30-1) was the lone wicket-taker with the ball for India. South African skipper Laura Wolvaardt was named the Player of the Match for her match-defining knock, which included 14 boundaries and five maximums.
