Em Arlott, Georgia Davis Star as Warwickshire Women Beat Essex by 5 Wickets After Bowling Them Out for 157

Under clear skies at Chelmsford, this ECB Women’s One-Day Cup 2026 clash between Essex Women and Warwickshire Women unfolded as a measured, low-scoring contest where composure ultimately trumped early nerves. The surface offered just enough assistance for the bowlers to keep batters honest, and it showed right from the outset as Essex struggled to build sustained momentum despite a few promising partnerships.

Essex’s innings began on a cautious note, and they were dealt an early setback when Cordelia Griffith fell for 6, trapped lbw by Em Arlott at 1/36 in 9.4 overs. That early breakthrough set the tone for Warwickshire’s disciplined bowling effort. Grace Scrivens, however, stood firm at the top, anchoring the innings with a patient 59 off 88 balls, striking 6 boundaries. She tried to stitch stability alongside Alice Macleod, but the latter couldn’t convert her start, departing for 7 as Essex slipped to 2/55 in 15.6 overs.

The innings continued to stutter as wickets fell at regular intervals. Amara Carr managed just 1 before becoming Georgia Davis’ victim, leaving Essex at 3/67 in 18.4 overs. A brief counterattack came through Joanne Gardner, who injected some urgency with a brisk 24 off 24 balls, including a boundary and two sixes. She shared a handy stand with Scrivens, but her dismissal at 4/100 in 24.2 overs once again pegged Essex back.

From there, the middle and lower orders failed to fully capitalise. Florence Miller was dismissed for 0, while Kate Coppack (5) and Sophie Munro (0) couldn’t provide much resistance as wickets tumbled from 4/100 to 8/132. Sophia Smale added a fighting unbeaten 28 off 42 balls, attempting to push the total towards respectability. Abtaha Maqsood chipped in with 9, but Essex were eventually bowled out for 157 in 39.4 overs, with extras contributing 18.

Warwickshire’s bowling unit was clinical and well-rounded. Em Arlott led the charge with 2/14 in 5 overs, maintaining tight lines. Georgia Davis (2/41 in 10 overs) and Hannah Baker (2/38 in 8 overs) ensured there was no respite through the middle phase, while Charis Pavely (2/10 in 3.4 overs) cleaned up the tail efficiently. Contributions from Issy Wong and Amu Surenkumar, who picked up a wicket each, added to a complete bowling performance.

Chasing 158, Warwickshire Women approached the target with caution but confidence. The early wicket of Amu Surenkumar for 3 at 1/8 in 3.4 overs gave Essex a glimmer of hope, but Davina Perrin steadied things with a composed 43 off 59 balls. She built a crucial partnership with Meg Austin, who scored 17, taking the score to 66 before Austin’s dismissal at 2/66 in 15.4 overs.

Perrin continued to anchor before falling at 3/66 in 16.1 overs, briefly opening the door for Essex. However, Katie George played a captain’s knock, remaining unbeaten on 42 off 71 balls. She found solid support from Charis Pavely, who contributed a valuable 26, and together they guided Warwickshire past the tricky middle phase.

Even as Natasha Wraith fell for 4 and a run-out ended Pavely’s stay at 4/118, the chase never truly spiralled. Em Arlott added the finishing touches with an unbeaten 18, ensuring there were no late hiccups. Warwickshire reached 160/5 in 40.4 overs, sealing a five-wicket win with 56 balls to spare.

Essex’s bowlers had moments of promise. Eva Gray (1/33 in 7 overs), Kate Coppack (1/26), Sophia Smale (1/32), and Joanne Gardner (1/13) all picked up wickets, but the lack of scoreboard pressure made their task significantly harder.
