Maria Ribeiro, Lara Moises Lead as Brazil Women Bowl Out Botswana for 85 in 8-Wicket Win

Brazil Women delivered a dominant all-round performance to seal a comprehensive victory over Botswana Women in the Kalahari Women’s T20I Tournament, with the contest largely shaped in the opening innings itself. Put into bat first, Botswana Women never found any rhythm as Brazil’s disciplined bowling attack dismantled their lineup early and consistently.

The innings began on a shaky note as Laura Mophakedi fell for just 5, caught by Lindsay Boas off the bowling of Maria Ribeiro, setting the tone for what would become a collapse. Fellow opener Pako Mapotsane struggled to get going, while Gratile Kgeresi fell for a golden duck, becoming one of Ribeoro’s early victims and skipper Tuelo Shadrack also fell cheaply for 1. At 3-8 inside four overs, Botswana were already under immense pressure.

The middle order did step up in pockets against Brazil’s relentless bowling attack. Mapotsans showed brief resistance during her 14-run stay but was bowled by Lara Moises, who was exceptional throughout her spell. Goabilwe Matome and Amantle Mokgotlhe revived the innings, though briefly. Their notable contributions, 30* off 55 and 14 off 15 respectively, kept the scorecard ticking.

The lower order offered no resistance, with Marapelo Phiase and Kesego Inakale departing for 8 and 0. Botswana Women were eventually restricted to just 85 runs for the loss of 7 overs, a total that reflected Brazil’s bowling dominance.

Maria Ribeiro was undoubtedly the standout performer, delivering a sensational spell of 3 wickets for just 12 runs in 4 overs, alongside Lara Moises, who was equally impressive, claiming 2 wickets for 9 runs in her three over, completely breaking the backbone of Botswana’s innings. Laura Cardoso chipped in effectively with 2 wickets for 18/runs in her 3 overs, ensuring there was no respite for the opposition.

Chasing a modest target of 86 runs, Brazil Women approached the innings with confidence but did lose an early wicket. Lindsay Boas, who opened the batting, got going with a boundary before being dismissed at 1–12 in just 2.1 overs. However, any hopes of a Botswana’s comeback were quickly shut down by a calm and controlled partnership.

Laura Agatha (10 off 20) and Laura Cardoso stitched together a 35-run stand to guide Brazil to a comfortable position in the chase. Roberta Avery joined Cardoso to complete the chase, with the two remaining unbeaten on 15* off 19 and 40* off 34 respectively. Extras also played a role, adding 16 runs to the total. Brazil reached 86/2 in just 12 overs, finishing the chase with 48 balls remaining, an emphatic statement victory.

From the bowling side for Botswana, Tuelo Shadrack and Merapelo Phiase managed to pick up one wicket each. Goabilwe Matome bowled economically, conceding just 6 runs off her two overs, but the low total left little room for bowlers to make an impact.
