Palmira Cuinica and Laura Chipanga Star as Mozambique Women Beat Lesotho by 32 Runs

Mozambique Women produced a composed and disciplined performance to outclass Lesotho Women in the 11th match of the Kalahari Women’s T20I Tournament 2026, with key contributions coming at crucial junctures in both innings. The match began with Mozambique looking to build a steady foundation, but Lesotho’s bowlers ensured there were no early freebies on offer.

Olga Mondlane got the innings underway with a measured 16 off 16 balls, but Mozambique suffered an early setback when Palmira Cuinica was dismissed for 12 off 24 balls at 1-25 in 5.4 overs, bowled by Boitumelo Tlali. The pressure continued as Mondlane herself departed at 2-32 in 7.2 overs, also falling to Tlali, leaving Mozambique searching for stability. Amelia Mundundo (4 off 7) and Wisley Bucuane (0 off 1) could not provide much resistance, with the latter trapped lbw by Tlali at 3-32 in 7.3 overs.

The middle overs saw a struggle for momentum as wickets kept tumbling. Irene Mulhovo managed just 1 run before falling at 7-39 in 10.2 overs, while Cristina Magaia was dismissed for a duck at 5-35 in 8.3 overs. At this stage, Mozambique were in a precarious position, but a vital lower-order effort helped them recover. Rosalia Haiong contributed a steady 10 off 17 balls, while Regina Mazumba added a run-a-ball 10 before being run out at 8-65 in 13.6 overs.

The late surge came through Laura Chipanga, who played a crucial cameo of 18 off 14 balls, striking at 128.57, before being run out at 10-104 in 18.3 overs. Angelica Salomao remained unbeaten on 6 off 6 balls, ensuring Mozambique posted a competitive 104 in 18.3 overs, aided significantly by 26 extras.

Lesotho’s bowling unit showed discipline and control throughout. Boitumelo Tlali was the standout performer, delivering a superb spell of 4 overs for just 10 runs and picking up 4 wickets, dismantling the top and middle order. Retsepile Limema also impressed with figures of 4-0-21-3, while Boitumelo Phelenyane chipped in with 1 wicket for 22 runs. Maneo Nyabela (4-1-29-0), Bonolo Mosoabi (1-0-13-0), and Lindiwe Polaki (1.3-0-9-0) supported well, keeping the scoring in check.

In response, Lesotho Women’s chase never quite found rhythm as Mozambique’s bowlers struck at regular intervals. Kananello Molapo started with intent, scoring 8 off 10 balls before falling at 1-9 in 1.5 overs, caught off Palmira Cuinica. Tebogo Mosobela (1 off 4) followed soon after at 2-12 in 2.6 overs, and Maneo Nyabela was dismissed for a duck at 3-13 in 3.3 overs, leaving Lesotho under early pressure.

Boitumelo Tlali attempted to anchor the innings with a patient 12 off 21 balls, but the lack of partnerships hurt Lesotho badly. Nthatuoa Thekiso was dismissed for 0 at 4-14 in 3.5 overs, and Makopano Mabathoana managed 7 off 21 before falling at 5-38 in 9.5 overs. A brief stand between Tlali and Boitumelo Phelenyane added some resistance, but the latter was run out for 12 at 7-46 in 13.1 overs.

The collapse continued as Retsepile Limema (1 off 9), Lindiwe Polaki (2 off 9), and Bonolo Mosoabi (2 off 15) failed to accelerate. Lesotho eventually limped to 72 in 19.2 overs, falling short by 32 runs.

Mozambique’s bowling attack was clinical and well-coordinated. Palmira Cuinica delivered a match-winning spell, picking up 3 wickets for just 9 runs in her 4 overs, maintaining tight control with an economy of 2.25. Regina Mazumba supported brilliantly with 2 wickets for 18 runs, while Laura Chipanga claimed 1 wicket for 10 runs in her 4 overs. Angelica Salomao also chipped in with 1 wicket, conceding 18 runs, and Olga Mondlane added 2 wickets in her 2.2 overs, wrapping up the tail efficiently.

This comprehensive performance highlighted Mozambique Women’s resilience, especially their ability to recover from a shaky batting start and defend a modest total with disciplined bowling. Lesotho Women, despite some impressive bowling spells, will need to address their batting inconsistencies moving forward.
