Sune Luus on Kayla Reyneke’s Last-Ball Six on ODI Debut: Great Signs for South Africa’s Future

“It’s great signs for the future of South African cricket. It’s awesome just to see the players come in and just flourish like that. I think when we were younger, I can’t remember being that confident or just coming in and hitting sixes for fun. It’s really awesome to see how the women’s game has grown and how Kayla just took responsibility and earned it,” said Sune Luus.

Kayla Reyneyke has made a good reputation for herself with limited appearances in international cricket, as she has scored some match-winning knocks. She made her ODI debut against New Zealand and she secured the Player of the Match award, scoring an unbeaten knock of 42 and scoring a six off the last ball to win the game for her side. She has hit 12 sixes from 7 innings in her career, and she has flexed her power-hitting capabilities at the international stage.

Ayabhonga Khaka was exceptionally good against New Zealand in the series opener with a career-best 6-fer. “She took wickets at crucial times. She’s been a senior bowler for us for a very long time and always takes responsibility and loves a good challenge. I’m very happy for her. It’s a great milestone to get a six-fer. Hopefully, she can just continue picking up all the wickets for the next couple of games,” said Sune Luus.

She picked up 6 wickets and gave away just 56 runs from her 10 overs, which also included a maiden over. She has been consistently delivering at the international stage for the Proteas. In her ODI career, she has picked up 151 wickets from 120 innings at an economy rate of 4.30. She has been a key player in the bowling unit as she picks wickets at crucial stages of the game.

“Derckie is an interesting one to bat with. I don’t think she takes it very seriously. It was fun to bat with her. When she’s in, the runs are just flowing. She’s a very powerful hitter of the ball. I think we were cruising when we came in, batting at a run-a-ball together. It was just important for us to stay calm and to have that long partnership, and just to take it as deep as possible,” said Sune Luus.

Annerie Dercksen has been yet another interesting prospect on the South African side with her batting abilities. She scored a fine knock of 72 off just 93 balls at a strike rate of 77, and she put up a brilliant partnership of 123 runs along with Sune Luus. This partnership was crucial in the context of the game as they stabilised the innings, after both the openers were dismissed by the 6th over.

With such talented prospects finding their place in the starting squad for the Proteas and performing well in crucial matches, the future of their side is looking well secured. They will be happy that their side is not dependent on any experienced players or a couple of players for victory, as they have consistent performers across departments. The South African Women will be pushing for direct qualification to the 2029 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.
