New Zealand Take 2-1 T20I Lead Over South Africa; Sophie Devine Stars With 55 Not-Out

The 3rd T20I between New Zealand Women and South Africa Women in Auckland unfolded as a gripping contest, with momentum swinging across both innings before the hosts held their nerve to seal a composed chase. Opting to bat first, South Africa Women had a shaky start as early breakthroughs dented their plans to build a solid foundation.

The innings began on a cautious note, but the early dismissal of Tazmin Brits for 0 (6) at 1.2 overs, followed quickly by Sune Luus for 3 (5) at 2.1 overs, left South Africa reeling at 9/2. The pressure was evident, and it required a stabilizing partnership to bring the innings back on track. Captain Laura Wolvaardt anchored the innings with a composed 37 off 39 balls, stitching together a crucial 51-run stand with Anneke Dercksen, who injected momentum with a brisk 27 off 18 deliveries, including 2 fours and 2 sixes.

Their partnership helped South Africa recover to 60/3 by the 7.6-over mark. However, New Zealand’s bowlers ensured there was no prolonged dominance. Sophie Devine played a key role with the ball, picking up 2 wickets for 21 runs in her 3 overs, while Suzie Bates also struck twice, returning figures of 2/10 in her 2 overs to break the middle order. The dismissal of Chloe Tryon for 15 (12) at 11.2 overs further stalled the innings, leaving South Africa at 84/4.

The middle-to-late overs saw a mix of consolidation and late acceleration. Nadine de Klerk contributed 8 (13), but her dismissal at 101/5 in 14.4 overs meant South Africa struggled to fully capitalize. A late flourish came from Kayla Reyneke, who remained unbeaten on 34 off 20 balls, striking at an impressive 170.00, adding valuable runs in the death overs alongside Sinalo Jafta (4 off 4) and Ayabonga Khaka (3* off 3). South Africa eventually posted 149/7 in their 20 overs, with Jess Kerr (1/30), Rosemary Mair (1/32), and tight spells from Amelia Kerr (0/32) and Lea Tahuhu (0/19) contributing to restricting the total.

Chasing 150, New Zealand Women began positively but lost Georgia Plimmer early for 4 (3) at 1.3 overs. Isabella Gaze added a quick 17 off 15 balls before falling at 35/2 in 4.6 overs, giving South Africa a glimmer of hope. The innings was then steadied by a crucial 30-run partnership between Amelia Kerr and Sophie Devine. Kerr’s 30 off 28 balls kept the scoreboard ticking before she was trapped lbw at 65/3 in 9.1 overs.

The defining phase of the chase came with Sophie Devine taking control. Leading from the front, she played a match-winning knock of 55* off 38 balls, smashing 6 boundaries and a six. She found excellent support from Maddy Green, who scored an unbeaten 34 off 25 deliveries. Their unbroken 84-run partnership for the fifth wicket ensured there were no further hiccups, guiding New Zealand to 152/4 in 18.4 overs, completing the chase with 8 balls remaining.

South Africa’s bowlers tried to stay in the contest, with Ayanda Hlubi (1/31) and Nonkululeko Mlaba (1/20) picking up key wickets, while Anneke Dercksen also chipped in with 1/17. However, the lack of breakthroughs in the death overs cost them dearly as Devine and Green dominated proceedings.
