Courtney Webb’s 59 Powers South Australia to 3-Wicket Win Over NSW Breakers

A thrilling late finish lit up the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) clash in Adelaide as South Australia Scorpions edged past New South Wales Breakers in a high-scoring encounter. Chasing a stiff target in the final overs, South Australia held their nerve to seal a dramatic three-wicket victory with three balls to spare, thanks to crucial contributions across the batting order and a match-defining knock from Courtney Webb, who was later named Player of the Match.

The contest began with New South Wales looking to build a strong platform after being asked to bat. However, their innings got off to a shaky start when opener Tahlia Wilson fell early for 5 off 14 balls, caught behind off the bowling of Ella Wilson. Shortly after, the visitors suffered another setback when Anika Learoyd was trapped lbw by Courtney Neale for 0, leaving New South Wales struggling at 15/2 in the seventh over.

The rebuilding phase was led by opener Katie Mack and Claire Moore, who steadied the innings with a patient partnership. Moore contributed 23 off 43 balls, but her stay ended when she was stumped by wicketkeeper Bridget Patterson off the bowling of Amanda-Jade Wellington. That dismissal left New South Wales at 64/3 in the 18th over, still searching for momentum.

The innings truly gathered pace through a superb partnership between Mack and captain Georgia Adams. Mack anchored the innings with a composed 69 from 88 balls, striking seven boundaries and rotating the strike effectively. Adams played a more aggressive role, hammering 90 off 95 deliveries with 12 fours, as the duo added 83 crucial runs for the fourth wicket. Their partnership lifted New South Wales into a strong position before Mack was dismissed at 147/4 in the 35th over, caught by Ellie Johnston off Jemma Barsby.

Adams continued to accelerate, but her run-out in the 47th over for 90 halted what could have been a match-defining century. In the closing overs, Maitlan Brown provided a valuable late flourish with an unbeaten 46 from 49 balls, while Lucy Finn added a rapid 16 off just seven balls, including two sixes. Their unbroken stand ensured New South Wales finished strongly at 259/5 in 50 overs.

South Australia’s bowling effort was disciplined rather than destructive. Neale and Ella Wilson picked up a wicket each during the early overs, while Wellington and Barsby also chipped in with one apiece. Though Madeline Penna went wicketless, she remained part of the rotation as South Australia attempted to contain the scoring during the middle phase.

Chasing 260, South Australia faced early pressure when opener Ellie Johnston fell for 5, caught by Frankie Nicklin off Lauren Cheatle. A solid recovery came through a 70-run second-wicket partnership between Emma de Broughe and Webb. De Broughe struck 36 off 43 balls with seven boundaries, keeping the chase on track before she was bowled by Sarah Coyte.

Webb then took charge of the innings, compiling a fluent 59 from 59 balls, including seven fours. She stitched together another important stand with Penna, who contributed 21 off 41 balls, guiding South Australia past the halfway mark of the chase. However, wickets began to fall at regular intervals as Penna was dismissed by Brown, followed by Hollie Armitage, who managed 9, trapped lbw by Nicklin.

The game tightened further when Patterson (42 off 49) and Barsby (40 off 52) departed in quick succession, leaving South Australia needing a composed finish. Their partnership had added 84 runs, keeping the chase alive during a tense middle phase. With the equation still demanding runs in the final overs, Wellington stepped up with a quick 28 not out from 22 balls, striking two fours and a six. She found support from Eleanor Larosa, who remained 9 not out, as the pair calmly guided South Australia home.

New South Wales’ bowling attack worked hard throughout the chase. Nicklin was the most successful, claiming 2/23 in six overs, while Cheatle, Brown, Coyte and Adams all picked up a wicket each. Despite their efforts, South Australia’s depth in batting proved decisive as they reached 260/7 in 49.3 overs, completing a memorable chase.

The victory provided a dramatic highlight in the Women’s National Cricket League, showcasing the competitive balance and depth of Australia’s domestic women’s cricket. With key performances from Webb, Patterson, Barsby and Wellington, South Australia demonstrated remarkable composure under pressure, while New South Wales could still take positives from strong innings by Adams and Mack in what turned out to be one of the most entertaining WNCL matches of the season.
