New Zealand have been dealt a blow ahead of the ODI series against Zimbabwe with top-order batter Georgia Plimmer ruled out due to a shoulder injury sustained during training in the recent T20I leg of the tour.

Plimmer picked up a shoulder injury while preparing for the final match of the T20I series, which New Zealand completed with a dominant performance. The White Ferns sealed the three match T20I series 3-0. Plimmer featured earlier in the first T20I as New Zealand established a strong platform at the top of the order, continuing her steady form in international cricket.
Head coach Ben Sawyer admitted the injury was a significant setback for the group, particularly given Plimmer’s role at the top of the batting order. “Georgia is a key player for us at the top of the order and the energy she brings into the group is something we really value, so it’s a shame to have her miss this next series,” Sawyer said. Plimmer has become an important presence in the White Ferns lineup, not only for her ability to anchor an innings in the 50-over format but also for her intent during the powerplay overs, where New Zealand have looked to be more proactive in recent months.
Her absence means a reshuffle at the top as New Zealand transition from the shorter format to the ODI series, where building substantial totals will be central to their approach. The White Ferns’ recent ODI form has been built around posting competitive scores and then applying sustained pressure with the ball. With Plimmer sidelined, team management have opted for continuity by retaining Bella James in the squad as her replacement.
James, who represents Otago Sparks in domestic cricket, was initially called in as injury cover prior to the third T20I but will now remain with the squad for the entire ODI series. Sawyer expressed strong confidence in the 24-year old’s readiness for the step up. “Bella is a great cricketer who’s played nearly 100 List-A matches in her career so far. That experience is extremely valuable, and she’ll fit straight back into the side seamlessly,” he said.
James’ domestic record supports that assessment. Across close to a century of List-A appearances she has accumulated consistent runs at the top and middle order, combining composure with the ability to rotate strike effectively over long innings. That experience in the 50 over format is expected to ease her transition into international ODI cricket, particularly against a Zimbabwe side still developing depth at this level.
This ODI series presents an opportunity to consolidate the dominance they displayed in the T20Is. The comprehensive nature of the 3-0 sweep, with winning margins stretching well beyond 50 runs in multiple matches, has given the squad momentum. The focus now shifts to sustaining that intensity across 50 overs while refining combinations ahead of the international calendar.
While Plimmer begins her rehabilitation with an eye on returning to full fitness, the White Ferns will look to maintain their upward trajectory. The loss of a first-choice opener is never ideal, but in James they have a seasoned domestic performer ready to step in, and a squad eager to continue translating strong performances into results on the international stage.
