Rachael Trenaman Earns Maiden Call-Up, Maitlan Brown Returns as Australia Shuffle Test Squad

Australia has made significant late changes to its squad ahead of the one-off day-night Test against India women’s national cricket team, with injuries forcing the withdrawal of key players just days before what promises to be a historic contest. The Test at the WACA in Perth, scheduled to begin on Friday, March 6, 2026, will be the final international appearance for Australia skipper Alyssa Healy, whose farewell has been a central storyline of the tour.

Australia’s preparations were rocked when seamer Kim Garth was ruled out of the Test with a quad injury and all-rounder Sophie Molineux was confirmed unavailable due to lower back pain. The unavailability of two frontline players has left a notable gap in the Australian side’s bowling and all-round balance, prompting selectors to draft in reinforcements from domestic ranks. With fitness concerns also lingering around star all-rounder Ellyse Perry, Australia has made sure its bench strength is tested and ready.

To bolster the squad, selectors have handed opportunities to two players who now find themselves part of a memorable week in Australian cricket. Rachel Trenaman, a promising Tasmanian batter, has earned her first senior call-up after consistent performances in domestic competitions. This maiden selection represents a major step in Trenaman’s career, offering her the chance to experience the Test environment and potentially make her debut on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

Joining her is another intriguing inclusion in Maitlan Brown, a fast bowler from New South Wales (NSW) making a return to the national fold after a five-year absence. Brown’s last international appearance came in 2019, but her strong domestic form, at home and overseas, has kept her in consideration and now earned her a recall when the team needs experienced bowling depth. Her pace and aggression will be pivotal, especially with Garth’s absence and the unique challenges of Perth’s traditionally pace-friendly wicket under lights.

These squad changes come on the back of Australia’s dominant performance in the preceding One-Day International (ODIs) series against India. The hosts completed a comprehensive 3–0 sweep in the ODI leg, with the final match on March 1, 2026, producing one of the tour’s standout performances. Healy ended her ODI career in spectacular fashion, smashing 158 off 98 balls as Australia posted a mammoth 409/7 at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval. Beth Mooney backed her up with an unbeaten 106, helping Australia to a 185-run victory after dismissing India for 224.

Earlier in the series, Australia also claimed convincing victories in the first two ODIs. In the opener on February 24, they chased down India’s 214 with relative ease, finishing on 217/4 with 38.2 overs to spare, anchored by a composed 76 from Mooney and contributions from Healy. The second ODI saw Georgia Voll score a century (101) and Phoebe Litchfield (80) help lead a successful chase of 252/5, wrapping up the match in 36.1 overs and ensuring Australia’s clean sweep.

With the ODI series win and a 8–4 edge in the multi-format points race, Australia enters the Perth Test with momentum and the chance to seal the series outright. But beyond points and trophies, the occasion is firmly centered on Healy’s farewell. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter has been one of the standout performers of the series and will aim to bow out of international cricket on a high note in red-ball cricket, just as she did in the limited-overs format.

For Trenaman and Brown, the opportunity to be part of Healy’s final Test is an unexpected but valuable milestone in their careers, and one that underscores the depth of talent in Australian women’s cricket. As Australia regroup and look ahead to the March 6 Test, all eyes will be on how the new inclusions adapt and whether they can make an impact on an occasion steeped in significance.
