Decade in Review – Top ODI wicket takers, by year

In this decade we saw a lot of runs being scored and a lot of wickets taken. Let us look at the stats of top wicket-takers in this decade by year:

2010: Katherine Brunt (England)

Katherine Brunt is still a member of the women’s England cricket team. She is considered to be the greatest ever English fast bowler as she is the highest wicket-taking fast bowler currently for England. She started her career in 2004 and went on to win England’s women cricketer of the year two times, that is in 2006 and 2010. In 2010, she took 19 wickets in just 11 matches with a superb economy of 3.45. The 34-year-old bowler is still considered to be the best wicket-taking option for England-W.

2011: Anisa Mohammed (West Indies)

The 31-year-old Trinidadian cricketer was the highest wicket-taker in 2011, who took the highest no.of wickets in this decade that is 37. These 37 wickets came from just 13 innings, with an economy of 2.33, which is the lowest in this decade. Since her debut in 2003, she has been shining like gold for her team.

2012: Ellyse Perry (Australia)

The most efficient all-rounder for Australia in this decade has been Ellyse Perry. Perry is the youngest person to represent Australia in cricket and the first Australian to have appeared in both cricket and football World Cups. Her best year with the ball was in 2012 when she had 15 wickets in her bag. She went on to win great honors like the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Award 2 times.

2013: Stafanie Taylor (West Indies)

The current captain of West Indies women’s cricket team was the top wicket-taker in 2013. Almost every batswoman failed in front of her spin bowling that year where she took 32 wickets in 20 innings. The Jamaican debuted in 2008 vs Ireland and since then she has represented her team more than 80 times.

2014: Sana Mir (Pakistan)

The only Pakistani women’s cricketer to rank number 1 in ICC ODI bowler ranking is Sana Mir. The 33-year-old was the former captain of Pakistan women’s team and her mind-blowing off-spin bowling is her specialty. 21 wickets in 11 matches were taken by her in 2014 where her economy was only 2.9. She has led Pakistan to two Gold medals in Asian Games 2010 and 2014.

2015: Anam Amin (Pakistan)

After her debut in 2014, the young cricketer became the highest wicket-taker in 2015, and also she equaled the record of best figures in an ODI in the same year. The 27-year-old is a slow left-arm orthodox bowler, who is now a very crucial part of her side. In 2015, she impressed the world by taking 25 wickets in just 9 matches.

2016: Sune Luus (South Africa)

The youngest cricketer in this list, who is just 23 years old now made an impression in 2016 with her leg-spin bowling. She holds the record of taking the highest wickets in this decade that is 37, which is shared by A Mohammed in 2011. Her debut was in 2012 vs Bangladesh when she was the youngest in her squad.

2017: D van Niekerk (South Africa)

Dane van Niekerk is the captain of the South African team in all three formats since 2016. She continued the dominance of South Africa in bowling from the past year and took 31 wickets with her leg-spin bowling. She is one of the first two South African females (along with Marizanne Kapp) to be included in the Eastern Province cricket team academy (men’s team). With bowling, she also developed herself as a T20 opening batswoman.

2018: Leigh Kasperek (New Zealand)

Leigh Meghan Kasperek is a Scottish player who switched to New Zealand in order to play at a higher level. After her debut in 2015, she started with bowling spin but over the years established herself as a batswoman also. 2018 has been her best year till now where she took 20 wickets to become the highest wicket-taker that year.

2019: Jess Jonnasen (Australia)

The all-rounder from Australia has influenced the most this year, where she took 23 wickets in 12 innings. Her bowling helped Australia to keep a 100% success rate in ODI’s this year. In September 2019, during Australia’s series against Sri Lanka, Jess Jonassen completed her 100 wickets mark in ODI’s.
