Delhi Capitals once again stepped up when it mattered most, delivering a clinical all-round performance to book their place in a fourth consecutive Women’s Premier League (WPL) final. Opting to bowl first, Delhi’s bowlers held firm to restrict the Giants to 168 for 7 in their 20 overs. Beth Mooney top-scored for Gujarat with a well-made 62* off 51 balls, but Delhi’s attack kept things tight enough to keep the total within reach. In reply, the Capitals were brilliant from the outset. Openers Lizelle Lee and Shafali Verma tore into the target, combining for a blistering 89-run opening stand that put immediate scoreboard pressure on the Giants. Lee struck 43 off 24 balls with eight fours and a six, while Shafali contributed a swift 31 off 21 deliveries, setting the chase firmly on course.

Reflecting on their sustained success and the emotional weight of yet another final, Shafali said, “It’s a very emotional feeling, because we know this is our 4th year. We have been continuously reaching the finals for the past three years, but hopefully we’ll cross that line this year and win.” Her words highlighted the mix of pride and determination that runs through the DC camp.

After the openers’ departure, captain Jemimah Rodrigues and Laura Wolvaardt ensured there was no wobble, with Rodrigues adding a valuable 41 off 23 balls and Wolvaardt finishing 32 not out to guide Delhi to 169 for 3 in just 15.4 overs, a seven-wicket victory with 26 balls to spare.

Fielding remains a cornerstone of Delhi’s strategy, and all players contributed with energy and focus. Sneh Rana, who took a sharp catch in the field, summed up the team’s approach: “Mindset is always positive. Whatever ball is coming to you, you have to give it 100%.” The clarity in her remark speaks to a culture that values discipline and intensity, qualities that have helped DC perform consistently at the top level.

Shafali also praised the fluency of the opening alliance, saying, “It was very nice because both of us are batsmen who hit and play, and after a long time we have formed such a good partnership. We wanted to make it longer, but God is there, he knows what to do. It was a game-changing partnership.” The combination of aggression and understanding at the top proved decisive, and DC’s batters never looked under pressure after those first overs.

With the final now set against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on February 5, Delhi Capitals will aim to convert their remarkable streak of final appearances into ultimate success. Their all-round performance in the Eliminator consisting of batting, tight bowling, and committed fielding, underlines that they are peaking at the right time and ready for the biggest challenge yet.
