Canterbury Magicians produced a composed all-round performance to outclass Otago Sparks by nine wickets in the 25th match of the Women’s Super Smash 2025-26 at Christchurch, chasing down the target with authority and time to spare. The result was shaped by a disciplined bowling effort first and then a fluent batting display led by a commanding opening partnership that never allowed the contest to drift away from the home side.

Otago Sparks’ innings began on an unsettled note as they struggled to build early momentum against a well-organised Canterbury attack. Felicity Leydon-Davis was dismissed early for 4 (4 balls), edging Melissa Banks in the very first over with the score reading 4 for 1. Bella James attempted to steady the innings with a brisk 21 off 19 balls, striking two boundaries, but she was stumped by Abigale Gerken off Sarah Asmussen in the 2nd over, leaving Otago wobbling at 10 for 2.
Caitlin Blakely’s stay was short as well, scoring 5 off 7 deliveries before Stella Cornelius breached her defence, making it 3 for 43 in the powerplay phase. The middle overs saw Otago attempt a rebuild through Poppy Jay Watkins and captain Polly Inglis. Watkins laboured for 16 off 23 balls before being caught by Gerken off Lauren Smith at 63 for 4 in the 11th over. Inglis contributed 15 from 16 deliveries but fell at 74 for 5, caught and bowled by Asmussen, who emerged as one of the standout bowlers of the innings.
Olivia Gain added some impetus with a useful 16 off 18 balls, including two boundaries, before being caught by Kate Anderson off Banks at 98 for 6. Eva Gray then played a late counter-attacking knock of 28 off 21 balls, striking three fours at a strike rate of 133.33, but she was dismissed at 127 for 7 in the 19th over, again off Banks. Emma Black chipped in with a rapid 19 off 10 balls, while Anika Todd remained unbeaten on 5 off 2, pushing Otago Sparks to 141 for 7 in their 20 overs. Extras played a role too, contributing 12 runs.
Canterbury’s bowling effort was shared and controlled. Melissa Banks led the way with figures of 3 for 32 from her four overs, striking at key moments. Sarah Asmussen was exceptional in the middle overs, returning 2 for 14 at an economy of just 3.50. Stella Cornelius and Lauren Smith chipped in with a wicket each, while Lea Tahuhu bowled with pace and discipline despite going wicketless.
In reply, Canterbury Magicians began with calm intent rather than outright aggression. Kate Anderson and Naomi Stalenberg stitched together a decisive opening partnership of 113 runs that effectively broke the back of the chase. Anderson was the anchor, timing the ball beautifully and finding gaps with ease. Stalenberg played the supporting aggressor, rotating strike well and punishing loose deliveries. The pair navigated the power play safely before accelerating through the middle overs, frustrating the Sparks bowlers.
Naomi Stalenberg eventually departed for a well-crafted 51 off 41 balls, hitting eight fours, when she was bowled by Chloe Deerness at 13.6 overs, with the score on 113 for 1. By then, the equation was firmly in Canterbury’s favour. Kate Anderson remained unbeaten on a classy 66 off 49 balls, laced with 10 boundaries, controlling the chase with maturity. Izzy Sharp provided the finishing touches, scoring an unbeaten 23 off just 17 deliveries as the Magicians reached 145 for 1 in 17.5 overs, winning with 13 balls remaining.
Otago’s bowlers tried to stem the flow but found little assistance. Emma Black conceded 25 runs in her four overs, while Eva Gray went for 25 in 2.5 overs. Louisa Kotkamp and Poppy Jay Watkins bowled economically in patches but couldn’t break the partnership. Chloe Deerness claimed the lone wicket but was expensive overall.
With this comprehensive nine-wicket victory, Canterbury Magicians strengthened their position in the Women’s Super Smash 2026, showcasing balance, clarity in roles, and clinical execution in both departments.
