The Capri Sports owned team confirmed the decision on Saturday, January 5, announcing that the former Australian captain will lead the team in the league’s fourth season. Lanning was signed by UP Warriorz for INR 1.9 crore at the WPL auction held in December. She will now take charge of a squad that combines experienced international players with emerging Indian talent.

The Warriorz squad she inherits is viewed as one of the most balanced in the competition. Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma and senior batter Shikha Pandey form the backbone of the domestic core, offering experience and versatility. Alongside them is a group of seasoned international professionals like Sophie Ecclestone, Deandra Dottin and the new addition of the young Australian batter Phoebe Litchfield, giving Lanning what many see as a title-winning combination rather than a rebuilding unit.

This composition could be crucial for a franchise that has managed a knockout appearance but been far from impressive. UP Warriorz have yet to move beyond the semifinals in previous seasons, a pattern that has drawn attention despite their strong league-stage performances. With Lanning at the helm, the team will hope her experience of navigating high stakes matches can help overcome what has been described as a “semifinal curse.”

Lanning’s arrival as captain follows her retirement from international cricket. Since stepping away from the international stage, she has continued to perform at the highest levels, underlining her quality and competitiveness. Most recently, Lanning topped the run charts in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), 2025, with 479 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of around 136.

She recorded the highest score in WBBL 2025 with a monstrous 135 off 74 balls which featured 22 fours and four sixes. Her 100th WBBL appearance was also celebrated by scoring a 90 not out. Her aggressive approach this season while retaining her trademark control, underlined her ability to adapt and dominate at the highest level of the game.

The appointment places one of the most decorated figures in women’s cricket at the helm of the Warriorz. Lanning is a seven-time World Cup winner with Australia, her record as a leader and match-winner has made her one of the most influential players of this generation.

Ahead of the 2026 WPL auction, Lanning was released by Delhi Capitals after consistently taking the team to finals of all three WPL editions. She has also been one of the most reliable performers in the WPL since its inception. With 952 runs in 27 matches, she is the third highest run scorer in the league. Her ability to control the powerplay, rotate strike, and anchor innings during chases has set her apart as a complete top-order batter.

Speaking after her appointment, Lanning said she was excited by the challenge of leading the side in a rapidly growing competition. “It is a real honour to be named captain of the UP Warriorz. As the WPL enters its fourth season, it’s been incredible to see how the league has evolved, the quality of cricket, the competitiveness, and the emergence of exciting new talent continue to raise the standard each year. This is a talented group with a strong mix of international experience and Indian players, and I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

Her leadership credentials were a major factor behind the decision, according to the team management. Head coach Abhishek Nayar highlighted Lanning’s ability to guide players through demanding situations and build a strong team culture. “Meg brings a rare combination of experience, clarity, and calmness that sets her apart as a leader. Her understanding of the game, ability to manage high-pressure moments, and connect with players makes her the ideal captain for this group,” he said.

The Warriorz believe that Lanning’s influence will extend beyond match days. Her presence is expected to benefit younger players in the squad, particularly Indian cricketers who are still finding their footing at the elite level. Having led Australia through multiple title-winning campaigns, Lanning is seen as someone who can mentor players while maintaining high performance standards.

The 2026 season is shaping up to be a crucial one for UP Warriorz as the WPL continues to grow in stature and competitiveness. With franchises strengthening their squads and investing heavily in leadership and planning, the margins for success are becoming finer. In that context, the Warriorz’ decision to place one of the game’s most successful captains in charge could prove decisive. As preparations begin for the new season, UP Warriorz will hope that Meg Lanning’s experience, consistency, and leadership can guide the team deep into the tournament and put them firmly in contention for the WPL trophy.
