Her father works as a carpenter and now she has received India A call up. We are talking about budding cricketer Amanjot Kaur. Hailing from a humble family of Punjab, Amanjot had to face many difficulties on her way to learn the sport. Now she has been selected in the India A team for the upcoming Under 23 T20 Challenger Trophy and thus moves one step closer to achieving her dream.

Amanjot Kaur captained Chandigarh in the Under 23 T20 Trophy. She is an all-rounder who idolizes Hardik Pandya. In the Under 23 T20 Trophy, Kaur made 184 runs and took 10 wickets in 7 matches for her team. Kaur has already represented Punjab in the under 19 and under 23 categories in the past. Last year she was selected to play for India Green in Challenger Trophy.

Talking to Pratyush Raj of Times Of India, Kaur recollects the difficulties that she had to face when she first took up the sport. “You know the kind of society we have. When I showed interest in cricket, people used to say ladki hoke cricket khelte ho, ye ladkon ka game hai (you are a girl and playing cricket, which is a boys’ game). I used to be the only girl on the pitch. I think I became stubborn while playing with the boys”, she admits.

But family support is something which was constant for her. Her father Bhupinder Singh who works as a carpenter always had her back. “My father made sure I met all the requirements to achieve my aim. He used to accompany me to the practice ground every day. When I turned 18 last year, he gifted me a scooty and now I travel on my own.”

Things changed for Amanjot when she changed her coach four years ago after moving to Chandigarh. She started training under Nagesh Gupta who is a BCCI level-II cricket coach. Gupta considers Kaur as a hardworking girl. He also tells that she is very disciplined and a keen learner.

The Under 23 Challenger Trophy will kick off on December 11. Three teams India A, India B, and India C will play 3 matches against each other. The top 2 teams will play the final match on 15th December. All the matches will take place at the Siechem Stadium in Puducherry.
