Thipatcha Putthawong’s 5-Fer Headlines Thailand Women’s 8-Wicket Win Over Uganda

Thailand Women put on a stunning all-round performance to convincingly defeat Uganda Women in the 18th match of the ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy 2025 at the AIT Ground in Bangkok. What initially promised to be a competitive encounter quickly turned into a masterclass in discipline and execution, as Thailand’s bowlers took charge early on and never let Uganda find their footing.

Uganda’s innings stumbled right from the start. Thailand’s new-ball attack set the tone, creating pressure that proved crucial. The first breakthrough came with a run out, sending Janet Mbabazi back to the pavilion with just 5 on the board. Things took a turn for the worse for Uganda when Immaculate Nakisuuyi was trapped lbw shortly after, leaving them reeling at 5 for 2 just two overs in. Esther Iloku tried to stabilise the innings for a brief moment but was dismissed for just 7, further deepening Uganda’s troubles.

By the time Kevin Awino stepped onto the field, Uganda was already in a tight spot. Despite managing 6 runs off 7 balls, her wicket at 18 for 4 marked a significant low point in the innings. The middle-order offered little support, with Rita Musamali contributing just 4 runs, while the lower order crumbled under relentless pressure. The only notable resistance came from Stephani Nampiina, who managed to remain unbeaten on 23, showing maturity amidst the chaos.

However, her individual effort wasn’t enough to lift the team to a competitive total, as Thailand’s tight bowling, sharp fielding, and consistent breakthroughs restricted Uganda to a mere 55 runs in 19.3 overs.

Thailand’s dominance was largely due to their exceptional bowling performance. Thipatcha Putthawong was the standout performer, claiming 5 wickets for only 6 runs in 3.3 overs. Her variations, accuracy, and ability to challenge the stumps overwhelmed the Ugandan batters.

Support came from all corners: Suleeporn Laomi was superb, conceding just 4 runs in her 4 overs while bringing relentless pressure, and Phannita Maya maintained a tight grip on the game with her economical bowling. Sunida Chaturongrattana chipped in with a wicket too, ensuring that Uganda struggled to form any partnerships or rotate the strike.

Chasing a target of 56, Thailand approached their innings with a sense of calm. Despite losing Chanida Sutthiruang for a duck, Nattaya Boochatham and Nannapat Koncharoenkai steadied the ship. Boochatham scored a composed 24 off 26 balls, showcasing good timing and smart strike rotation. Koncharoenkai anchored the chase with an unbeaten 28 off 23 balls, effortlessly finding gaps and keeping the scoreboard ticking.

Their partnership took the game completely out of Uganda’s reach, as Thailand comfortably chased down the target in just 9 overs, finishing at 58 for 2. The eight-wicket victory, achieved with 66 balls still in hand, highlighted Thailand’s superior control in both innings.

This match served as a significant reminder of Thailand Women’s rising stature in emerging-nation cricket, built on discipline, sharp bowling, and level-headed batting. For Uganda Women, the defeat underscores the pressing need to revamp their top order and cultivate more stability under pressure. Thailand, on the other hand, marches forward with renewed confidence, bolstered by a resounding victory driven by Putthawong’s brilliance and a steady batting performance.
