The absence of captain Alyssa Healy, who was sidelined by a foot injury, proved pivotal, with Tahlia McGrath stepping in as captain.

Reflecting on the difficult choice regarding her participation in the semi-final, Healy shared the challenges of deciding whether to play despite her injury. She weighed the risks of playing, which could have jeopardized her long-term availability and the team’s prospects.

“It was a really hard decision to make last night as to whether or not we were going to give (me playing) a punt or not, and I tried to make the team decision and sat myself down instead of taking the risk,” Healy said.

Healy had already missed the India game and the semi-final due to the foot injury sustained during the group-stage clash against Pakistan.

She also reflected on the team’s environment and the belief they’ve nurtured within the Australian squad, showcasing the collective strength and unity they’ve fostered. The Australian skipper highlighted the depth of talent and trust within the squad, where every player feels empowered to step up in crucial situations, demonstrating the resilience and confidence embedded in the group.

Australia had been ruthless in the group stages, winning all four matches to qualify for the semi-finals, the only team to have done so in this edition. However, the 8-wicket defeat to South Africa not only shattered their entry to the final but also ended their 15-match winning streak in T20 World Cups.

Although Australia’s journey ended in the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, Healy highlighted the team’s growth throughout the tournament, with numerous positives, especially from young players stepping up in key moments. The 34-year-old emphasized the importance of building a strong foundation for the future.

“I think there’s been so many positives throughout this tournament, and the way that the girls are growing, learning, and continuing to want to get better shows the maturity of the side at such a young age,” Healy reflected.

Australia’s stand-in skipper, Tahlia McGrath, also acknowledged South Africa’s strong performance in the semi-final. She stressed that in tournaments like the World Cup, there’s little room for error but emphasized the team’s intent to support each other through the disappointment, expressing confidence that the team will bounce back stronger.

“They played really well tonight … in tournament play, you can’t afford to be off the mark at all. But we’ll get around each other, we’ll regroup, and there’s still plenty of cricket on the calendar,” McGrath said.
