Twitter Reactions | South Africa record a thumping 10-wicket victory over West Indies

South Africa stormed to a comprehensive 10-wicket victory over the 2016 champions West Indies in their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup clash, chasing down 119 inside 18 overs. This victory marks South Africa’s first-ever win against West Indies in the T20 World Cup.

After winning the toss, South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt chose to bowl, trusting that the fresh wicket and favorable stats for chasing teams would work in their favor.

West Indies struggled to find their rhythm, losing both openers during the powerplay. Deandra Dottin showed a brief spark with three boundaries but was soon dismissed by Marizanne Kapp. Stafanie Taylor, standing firm at number three, fought valiantly for her unbeaten 44 off 41 balls, while Zaida James added a couple of boundaries to help push the total to 118. But it was Nonkululeko Mlaba who shone brightest with the ball, claiming 4 for 29 and leading South Africa’s bowling attack.

In reply, South Africa’s opening duo of Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits put on a batting clinic. Wolvaardt set the tone early with a flurry of boundaries, racing to a match-winning 59 off 55 balls. Brits, who initially played the supporting role, grew in confidence as the innings progressed, finishing unbeaten on 57 from 52 deliveries. Together, they forged the highest-ever partnership against West Indies in Women’s T20 World Cup history, sealing the win without losing a wicket.

The match saw an outpouring of praise on social media platform “X” (formerly known as Twitter) abuzz over South Africa’s dominant performance. Fans lauded Wolvaardt and Brits for their match-winning partnership, while Nonkululeko Mlaba’s four-wicket haul drew admiration for her crucial role. Stafanie Taylor’s courageous knock didn’t go unnoticed either, earning her recognition despite West Indies’ struggles.
