In the lead-up to the 2024 Women’s Twenty20 (T20) World Cup, favorites India will begin their campaign against the 2016 champions, West Indies, in the 4th warm-up game. The match will be played at the ICC Academy Ground 2, Dubai, on the 29th of September 2024.
India kicked off their 2024 season with a dominant performance, whitewashing Bangladesh in a 5-match away series. They then drew a 3-match T20I series against South Africa on home soil, bouncing back from 0-1 down after the second match was abandoned. In their most recent campaign, the 2024 Asia Cup in July, India enjoyed a 4-match winning streak before their run was halted by Sri Lanka in the final.
After back-to-back semifinal appearances in 2009 and 2010, India suffered early exits in the next three editions of the T20 World Cup. However, they rebounded with a semifinal finish in 2018, a runner-up spot in 2020, and another semifinal exit in 2023. Heading into the 2024 World Cup, India will be aiming for their best-ever finish but will face stiff competition in Group A from Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand in the league games.
Under the leadership of Hayley Matthews, the West Indies have experienced a resurgence, which continued in the 2024 season. They secured a commanding 4-1 victory in their away series against Pakistan and followed up with a 2-1 win in another away series against Sri Lanka in June 2024. This strong performance sets the stage for their upcoming challenges as they aim to build on their recent success.
At the T20 World Cups, the West Indies finished 5th in the inaugural edition but quickly established themselves as a formidable force with three consecutive semi-final finishes and improved on that record in 2016 by winning the title. In 2018, they entered the tournament as defending champions but were eliminated in the semifinal and finished 6th in the subsequent two editions. In their league games at the 2024 World Cup, they’ll face England, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Scotland in Group B.
The West Indies have secured 8 wins from 21 T20Is against India, with their last victory dating back to 2016. Since then, they have lost 8 consecutive matches against India. As both teams prepare for the upcoming World Cup, these warm-up games provide them with much-needed game time.
