Harshitha Samarawickrama is making waves in the world of women’s cricket, marking a standout year with exceptional performances and a significant career milestone. The talented Sri Lankan cricketer has now been signed by the Trinbago Knight Riders as the replacement player for Meg Lanning for the 3rd edition of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL), commencing from 22nd of August 2024. This marks her first-ever franchise team signing, and she is poised to make a mark on this new chapter of her career.

Samarawickrama’s remarkable form has been a highlight of recent cricketing events. Her recent performance in the ninth edition of the Women’s Asia Cup was nothing short of spectacular. In a historic final, Sri Lanka clinched their maiden ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup title by defeating the three-time champions India. Harshitha played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s victory, scoring 69 runs off 51 balls. Her innings was crucial, especially after the departure of Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu. Her composed performance under pressure earned her the Player of the Match award, ensuring her reputation as a player capable of delivering in high-stakes situations.

Samarawickrama’s achievements didn’t stop there; during the recent Sri Lanka tour of Ireland, she continued her impressive run of form. On August 18, 2024, in the second ODI held in Belfast, she scored her first-ever ODI century. Her innings of 105 runs, featuring 11 boundaries, was instrumental in showcasing her growing ability in the 50-over format.

In T20 Internationals, Samarawickrama has been equally outstanding. Over her career, she has amassed 1,463 runs, with a high score of 86 not out, achieved against Ireland in a recent match. Her innings of 86 runs off 45 balls, including 15 boundaries and one six, was a key factor in securing the Player of the Match award.
