On August 9, the victim’s lifeless body was discovered on the third floor of the state-run hospital. The post-mortem examination revealed she had been brutally sexually assaulted. Her semi-naked body was found in a seminar hall, a tragic consequence of the hospital’s lack of a dedicated rest room. The autopsy uncovered horrifying injuries, including a broken neck and severe bleeding from her eyes and mouth.

Despite mounting public pressure, the college principal was not dismissed but reassigned to another building. The incident has become a battleground for political conflict, with sharp exchanges between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Amidst this turmoil, peaceful protests by students, doctors, and trainees have taken place, and the Calcutta High Court has intervened, transferring the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Former Indian cricketer Mithali Raj voiced her outrage on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “The brutal rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata is a chilling reminder that even those who dedicate their lives to healing and saving others are not immune to the horrors of violence. It is beyond tragic that someone who vowed to protect and care for others fell victim to such a heinous act. Rapists must be punished with the full severity of the law. Every woman has the right to safety, freedom, and respect.”
